Description	:	Henry Sample Smith was born in Henry county Iowa, April 22, 1844 at his home in the north part of this city, Sunday August 5, 1923 at dawn he quietly passed to the great unknown. He was 79 years 3 months and 15 days of age. Read More	Henry Sample Smith was born in Henry county Iowa, April 22, 1844 at his home in the north part of this city, Sunday August 5, 1923 at dawn he quietly passed to the great unknown. He was 79 years 3 months and 15 days of age. At the age of 13 he moved with his father to the northern part of Missouri where he resided until the outbreak of the civil war when he joined the union forces at the age of 17 and became part of the Co H 10th regiment Missouri infantry. he continued in this company continously until his health failed him and he was discharged when he had regained his health he again enlisted this time in Co K 1st regiment Missouri cavalry entering the rank regiment rank of corporal. Corporal Smith served until the close of the war it is needles to say that he was in the great war and seen considerable service. but you never heard him exploiting his deeds in the army he performed his duty just as he lived his life afterwards in just an honoralbe and efficient manner. after the war was over he turned his attention to quieter pursuits he went to Macon, Missouri where he resided and made his home on March 14, 1870 he was united in marriage with Elizabeth Van Sickle to this union 8 children were born with the widow the entire family of children with one expection survive him the children as follows Mrs. J. Tucker, Jamestown, Mrs. J.W. Scott Seattle Wash. W. b. Smith Burwell, J.S. Smith Maxwell Mrs., G.P. Hansen St. Paul, Mrs. A.L. Kilpatrick of Cotesfield preceded him in death in 1901 Mrs. Kilpatrick left an infant son Henry Kilpatrick who made his home with his grandparents all these years.The Smith family came to Howard County in March 1878 and settled in the north part of the county where they resided continously for 23 years. here among pioneer conditions he was one aided in every way possible the development and growth of the community he was instrumental in organizing the school district 21 and he was the first director of the district and serve continuasly until he resigned when he was moving away from the district. After spending 23 years on the farm they moved to St. Paul and established a home in the north part of the city which they still own 3 years later they rented their home and moved to garfield county where they resided for 9 years since returning to this city, Mr. Smith erected a new commodious home in which they enjoyed in their declining years.he is survived by 3 sisters Mrs. Jane Shoush Mrs. Louisa Durham near Taylor and Mrs. Henderson of Comstock 2 brothers S.S. Smith Sacramento California and A. L Smith of Cushing, staunch supports of G. A. R. meetings and Camby post number 8 funeral services at the M. E. Church on Monday, Pastor Rev. Cresap officiating. buried at Elmwood cemetery.
