Died, at his home in Marion, June 12th, Henry S., son of George and Keziah Patterson. He was born February 4th, 1861, near Marion, part of the old homestead being now included within the city limits. He is the fifth of seven children, and half brother of Mrs. Albert Oxley, all of whom survive him. He worked on the farm until his twenty-first year, when he and his brother Charles engaged in the mercantile business in Marion. Thinking that they saw a better opening in Logan, they moved their stock to that place, but a year after sold out and returned to Marion, where he and his brother Frank opened a grocery store, but failing health, after a few months, compelled his retirement. Not content to be idle, he served as clerk in T.R. Alexander's drug store a few months. His health having somewhat improved, he engaged as clerk in the Mentzer grocery in 1883, where he remained as one of the popular clerks, until within three weeks of his death. He was received into the Presbyterian church on examination and profession of his faith in Christ in 1877. He was married in Des Moines, October 19th, 1884, to Miss Emma Francis, daughter of Simon and Susannah Doran. They have two children, Lawrence Lesley, born July 27th, 1885, and Harmie, born March 29th, 1887. Mr. Patterson had always a frail constitution, and few have struggled more bravely and patiently for life than he, not giving up all hope of recovery until the Angel of Death was at the door and he felt the cold icy touch of his hand. The morning sun was rising, but the shadow of death was falling. Turing to his weeping wife regretting that he could not leave her and the children a larger portion of this world's good, he commended them to the care of the Good Sheppard. His pastor now entering the room, he spoke of sadness of the parting, but also of the hope of the future meeting. And before the midnight hour struck he was as we fondly hope, in that country that has no night. The funeral was held in the Presbyterian church, on last Sabbath afternoon, conducted by Revs. Gist, Fowler and Marshall, attended by a large number of sympathizing friends.
