Mr. Stephens had lived in Black Hawk county about fifty-five years and was well known in Spring Creek township and throughout the county especially among the veterans of the Civil war. Since coming to Waterloo, he had taken a great interest in G.A.R. work and these comrades in arms will miss him most. He was a man who was liked and admired by all who knew him and these many friends extend sincere sympathy to the bereaved relatives at this time. BIOGRAPHICAL Henry Stephens was born in Waukesha, Wis., December 25, 1838 and was thus 71 years old at his last birthday. His mother died when he was a week old. When he was eighteen years of age, he went to Chicago and spent a year after which he came to Iowa, settling in July 1857, on a farm in Spring Creek township near La Porte where he successfully farmed for forth-three years. Retiring from the farm, he moved to Waterloo, where he lived until his death. He was twice married, first to Nancy Harmon, the marriage taking place in Waterloo in 1860, only a little over a year before he was called to the front. Ten children were born to them, all of whom are living and most of whom will be present at the funeral. The children are Elonzo, Portland, Ore.; Mrs. Etta Engle and Mrs. Campbell, Algona; Mrs. Edith Waltz and Mrs. J. Weaver, Los Angeles, Calif; Ellis Stephens and Mrs. Clarence Remington, St. Hilare, Minn; Alfred, Spring Creek Township; Clarence Stephens and Mrs. Wilbur Betts, Waterloo. The first wife died in February, 1883, and he was married on July 20, 1888, to Mrs. Carrie Crandall of Waterloo, who survives. Milton Harmon of this city is a brother of the first wife. Deceased was the last of four brothers though he is survived by several half-brothers and sisters. Was in Sherman's March Mr. Stephens had a very interesting war record and one which shows his courage and bravery. He enlisted from Black Hawk county on August 8, 1863, at Davenport, as a private of Company D, 31st Regiment of the Iowa Infantry Volunteers, serving under Captain George Dearth and Colonel Smyth for three years. . . . Mr. Stephens participated in some of the most exciting and interesting events of the Civil war, notable the pursuit of General Hood and Sherman's famous March to the Sea. His stories of these times were always eagerly followed by his brother soldiers and friends and his experiences while detailed as "Forager" were particularly thrilling. Notes from Cathy Hernandez: Henry's father Mathias immigrated to America from Prussia in 1843. Although Henry's birthplace is sometimes identified as Wisconsin and sometimes as Prussia, his age and other family narratives indicate that he immigrated with his father from Prussia. Records also vary on the year of Henry's birth, however, family tradition holds that he was born 25 Dec 1833.
