The deceased had been in his usual state of health and the suddenness of his demise was a shock to this community and the entire county. The deceased was a native of Pennsylvania and came to Colorado about forty years ago, first settling in Denver where he conducted a blacksmith business and later, in 1878, moving to Silver Cliff with the great mining boom of that year. He opened a shop there and for a few years did a flourishing business until the town's first decline set in and then he moved to Westcliffe of which town he had been a resident every since. He was also engaged in the blacksmithing business here. He was a man whose work and his home were his forte, and Henry Stewart's shop was always open for business with the exception of Sundays and the holidays. So long and faithful in the service his acquaintanceship spread to every quarter of the county and as he was square and upright in all his dealings his friends were numbered by his acquaintances. He was a devoted husband and loving father. The deceased served our people one term as county commissioner and the town of Westcliffe as trustee for many years, being a member of the board at the time of his passing. In the discharge of these public duties he was a proficient officer, always manifesting interest for the welfare of his town and county. He was a highly esteemed member of the I. O. O. F., holding his membership in No. 34 of Silver Cliff, of which lodge he had been treasurer for twenty six years. He was a soldier in the Civil war and was a member of the G. A. R. He would have been 70 years old had he lived until the 16th day of this month. The widow and son survive and the community mingles its sorrows with theirs in their affliction. The funeral, under the auspices of the I. O. O. F., was held in the Ray Cusack building at 1 o'clock on Sunday, and was very largely attended. Rev. Edw. Berkemeyer, in a few well chosen remarks, spoke in eulogy of the man and left the lesson of his life for young men to emulate. This service past, the remains were followed to the Silver Cliff cemetery where were witnessed the last sad rites as performed by his brothers of the lodge, the burial taking place in the I. O. O. F. plot. The following named old-time residents acted as pall bearers: Jerome Becker, Judge John H. Leary, W. F. Merriam, Napoleon Mercier, H. F. Knuth and J. P. Falkenberg.
