He was promoted to Corporal on March 1, 1862 and to Full Sergeant on February 15, 1863. He was mustered out on June 19, 1863 at Albany, New York. Son of Joel Baird and Eliza Pike Baird. From the Rutland Daily Herald, Sept. 5, 1918: Henry Baird, a veteran of the Civil war, who was in Rutland yesterday with his wife to attend the annual reunion of the Rutland County Veterans' association, of which he was secretary, died en route to the fairgrounds. He started in the line of march from the G.A.R. Hall, where they had been served dinner and had listened to patriotic addresses. The veterans were to be the guests of the fair association, but he was unable to continue in the line beyond River street bridge and decided to take a trolley car which was near at hand. After getting aboard the car, it is believed that he was overcome by weakness due to the weather, and just as the car was nearing the entrance to the fairgrounds he fell against the seat and the occupants of the car soon discovered he was dead. The Stearns ambulance was summoned and the body was taken to the undertaking parlors of John B. Stearns and will be taken to his late home in Chittenden this morning. The deceased was 76 years old and had been a life long resident of Chittenden. He was a member of the Noyes post, G.A.R., of Chittenden, serving in the Civil war with company G of the 22d regiment of New York volunteers and he was also a member of the Meadow Lake grange. He is survived by his wife Addie Horton Baird, and one son, Horton Baird of Chittenden, one brother, Amos Baird of this city, and a half-sister, Mrs. Fitzgerald of Chittenden.
