Sterner, 72, of 29 Berlin St., who had assisted with security when the late President Lyndon B. Johnson visited the Dallastown Centennial, died at 9:35 a.m. Monday at Hillview House, Hanover, where he lived since Saturday. He was the husband of Ruth C. (Zartman) Sterner. The service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Sauter Funeral Home, 175 N. Main St., Spring Grove. Burial will be in the Jefferson Cemetery, with full military rites by Allied Veterans Council Honor Guard of Hanover. Viewing will be noon to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Mr. Sterner was born in Jefferson, the son of the late Elmer and Anna (Spangler) Sterner. He had served Jefferson Borough 45 years as a police patrolman and police chief. He was police chief 37 years before his retirement in 1976. He served for 15 years as a security officer for Numismatic Hanover Coin Show, of which he was a life member. As chief of police, he attended 15 Federal Bureau of Investigation schools and five Pennsylvania State Police schools. In 1966, he retired as a teller for the Codorus National Bank. He was a member of Christ United Church of Christ, where he was church council president, elder and deacon. He was a past president of Jefferson Cemetery Association, was a life member of Jefferson Fire Company, a member of York County Firemen’s Association, a member of Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 73, and a member of the Cleo and Tri-County Police associations. Also, he was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2506. A World War II veteran serving in the U.S. Army for two years, he was at Nancy and St. Lo, prior to the breakthrough in France. He was decorated with The Purple Heart and Oak Leaf Cluster. He also was at Normandy, France and in Germany. Mr. Sterner also is survived by a brother, Wilford E. Sterner, 23 Baltimore St., and a sister, Rosella P. Boose, Glen Rock RD 2. Officiating at the service will be his pastor, the Rev. C. Floyd Emerson and the Rev. Leonard L. Wolfgang, pastor of Evangelical Christian Church, Hanover.
