Description	:	Herald Marvin Tastad, 96, of Mayville, ND died June 1, 2015 at Lutheran Memorial Home, Mayville, ND. Herald Tastad was born in Brinsmade, ND October 3, 1918 to Tom and Ingrid Tastad. Herald and fraternal twin brother Gerald were the youngest of six children. When Herald was one year old the family moved to Portland Jct., ND where the family farmed. Herald Tastad was born in Brinsmade, ND October 3, 1918 to Tom and Ingrid Tastad. Herald and fraternal twin brother Gerald were the youngest of six children. When Herald was one year old the family moved to Portland Jct., ND where the family farmed. Herald attended Viking #11 school till the eighth grade when he and brothers, Gerald and Erling left to work in California for awhile. He attended and is a member at Bruflat Lutheran Church. Herald married Arlene Judell Anderson December 22, 1945. Herald and Arlene made Portland Jct. their final home where they raised six children. Herald grew up on the family farm and was drafted into World War II September 25th, 1941. He did his basic training at Fort Knox and was assigned to the 1st Armored Division. He was shipped overseas in 1942 first to Ireland then to North Africa. He was captured in North Africa in 1942 and was a POW for 28 months. After the war he returned to the Mayville Portland area was married and owned the Red Top Drive In. He also worked for his brothers Herman and Erling at Tastad Motor in Mayville and West Traill County Soil Conservation. He was active at Bruflat Lutheran Church with many events the men of Bruflat held from pancake fees to barbecues. He retired after many years of faithful service to the West Traill County Soil Conservation. Herald’s hobbies were being involved in American Legion, POW Past Commander, VFW of Mayville, his cabin at Golden Lake, planting trees, wood working, and making furniture for his children and grandchildren. Herald is survived by his six children: Greg Tastad, Deborah Sletten, Pamela Bertrand, John Tastad, Linda Tastad and Mark Tastad; 14 grandchildren; 11 great grand children; several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his wife Arlene, infant son, parents Tom and Ingrid, brothers Herman, Erling, Gerald and sisters Dagmar and Inez. Herald was blessed with many good friends and family and will be missed by all who knew him and had the pleasure to meet him. Blessed be his memory.
