Funeral services were held on Tuesday, June 20, 2006, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Ute with Rev. Edward Brandt officiating. Burial followed at St. Clair Cemetery at Ute. Herbert August William Koeppen was born to Louie Marten Koeppen and Alma Mathilda Schwarz on October 20, 1919 near Ricketts, Iowa. He was baptized at St Paul's Lutheran Church, Hanover Township, Iowa, on November 16, 1919. He was confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Ute, Iowa, on March 25, 1934. He was married to Esther Viola Strait on May 14, 1944. Grandpa Herb farmed in Monona County for most of his life and continued living on the family farm after his retirement. He enjoyed gardening and sharing the produce and flowers with family and friends. For more than 30 years, he spent the summertime fishing on Lake Minnewashta in Okoboji. He enjoyed sitting on the dock from morning until night, hoping to catch the "Big One." Grandchildren were always welcome to tag along and share whatever activities he was involved in at the time. Grandpa delighted in hearing about his grandchildren's lives and watching his great grandchildren grow. He loved their smiles and giving him "high five" whenever they passed by his chair. He was a lifetime member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Ute where he held various positions. He was also a member of the Monona County Farm Bureau. Those survivors left to embrace Grandpa Herb's memories are his 5 daughters, Judy (Tom) Seieroe of Sac City, IA, Joan (John) Neddermeyer of Ute, IA, Joyce (Bill) Magel of Sioux City, IA, Mary (Mike) Flood of Sioux City, IA, and Dorothy (Frank) Utterback of Kansas City, MO; his 9 grandchildren, Jaci (Brad) Elwell of Ute, IA, Shawn (Kristie) Neddermeyer of Webster City, IA, Scott Seieroe of Edina, MN, Missy (Josh) Wheeler of Sioux City, IA, Erin (Matt) Chatham of South Huntington, NY, Chelle Flood of Sioux City, IA, Marni Seieroe of Kansas City, MO, Ali Magel of Denver, CO, and Chris Utterback of Kansas City, MO; his 5 great grandchildren, Riley and Gaige Elwell, Kamren and Braden Neddermeyer, and Easton Wheeler; his sister, Marie (Lester) Miller of Moses Lake, WA; his sisters-in-law, Francis Koeppen of Mapleton, IA. and Dorothy Clausen of Lake View, IA; his brother-in-law, LaVerne Strait of Charter Oak, IA, and his special friends, Charlie and Arlene Swendsen. Herb was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, three brothers, Louie, Henry and Ernest and one sister, Elsie Henrichsen. Pallbearers were Grandpa Herb's grandsons, Shawn Neddermeyer, Scott Seieroe, Chris Utterback, Brad Elwell, Josh Wheeler and Matt Chatham.
