Herbert was born on April 20, 1924, in Muscatine, Iowa, the son of Herbert A. and Alberta (Latham) Toussaint, where they resided on Burnside Avenue. Following graduation from Muscatine Community High School in 1941, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy at age 17. He served four and one half years as a radioman during World War II and was very proud of his service. He married Darlene Cracraft on December 20, 1943, during leave from the Navy. They were happily married for 66 years. For 21 years, he and his wife owned the TV and Appliance Mart in West Liberty, Iowa. During that time, he served on the Chamber of Commerce, where he held the office of president and was also an active member of the Masons. After the sale of their store, he and his wife, moved to Iowa City, where he worked for the University of Iowa Speech and Hearing Department, where he was in charge of the TV and electrical equipment for eight years. After retiring to southern Missouri, he spent his time volunteering at the local senior center, often helping with tax forms. He enjoyed helping at the local animal shelter. He also had an extensive stamp collection. He is survived by his wife, Darlene Toussaint; his mother, Alberta Toussaint, age 105, of Galesville, Wisconsin; a brother, Bob Toussaint of Galesville, Illinois; his son, David Toussaint and wife, Le, of Mountain View, Missouri; a daughter, Nancy Carpenter and husband, Bill, of Naperville, Illinois, and daughter, Kitty Olsen and husband, Terry, of West Des Moines, Iowa; six grandchildren, John Toussaint, Jeff Carpenter and wife, Nancy, Andrew Carpenter and wife, Kat, Amy Tackett and husband, Mike, Eric Olsen and Tim Olsen and wife, Sara; and four great-grandchildren, Hunter and Jacob Tackett, Alex Carpenter and Penny Carpenter. He was preceded in death by his father, Herbert A. Toussaint; his brother, James Toussaint; and grandson, Mark Toussaint.
