Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. CST Thursday at Barbot-Seibel Funeral Home, Hazen. Herbert was born Dec. 10, 1919, to John and Lydia (Geist) Zuern at Hazen. He attended school through the eighth grade at Schramm School District No. 17, rural Hazen. Herb was baptized and confirmed at New Bethel Congregational Church of Hazen, where he remained a lifelong member. Herb married Lorina (Ziemann) March 16 1947. Together, they successfully farmed north of Hazen for 65 years. To love the Lord your God with your heart, soul and mind is the first and greatest command, Matthew 22:37-38. This Herb and Lorina chose to do all of their married life. No work on Sunday was a lesson learned early in their married life. They followed the Ten Commandments, and with God's help, they lived their lives according to the principals taught in God's Word, the Holy Bible. The second command listed in Matthew 22:39 is to love your neighbor as yourself. This too, Herb and Lorina did lovingly and willing. Having no children of their own, they loved on, parented and grandparented many young lives, teaching by word and deed, how to live life. They have been role models to many with their good farming practices, their hard work, their dedication to God's Word, church and being godly examples. A love and zeal for life found Herb interested in and trying out snowmobiles, boats, motorcycles, four wheelers, go-carts, many different kinds of cars, pickups and modern farm equipment. He enjoyed collecting toys, belt buckles, old steam engines, windmills, and old tractors. Together, Herb and Lorina restored numerous old tractors to perfect mint condition. Herb's sense of humor was revealed with his quiet gentle smile when someone would react to the plastic mouse jumping out of a box or Herb challenging someone with one of his metal brain teaser puzzles. They were a couple who enjoyed other people. When boating, neighboring farm children were invited along for the day. When motorcycling and snow snowmobiling they traveled with several other couples to their destinations in South Dakota and Wyoming. Visitors were frequent at the Zuern farm. Whether guests stayed for a meal, for a day, or a more extended stay — those who knew Herb and Lorina cherished their time with them and remained lifelong friends. Their home was a welcome haven for many. It didn't matter if you were a local Hazenite, an out of stater, or an international guest — you were welcomed and treated like an honored guest. Herb and Lorina had the privilege and opportunity to travel to Israel, Germany, Hawaii, and to many of the states in the U.S. One of Herb's regrets in his last years of life was that he wished they had traveled more. Godliness with contentment is great gain, I Timothy 6:6. Herb and Lorina were content, godly people. They were good caretakers of their land, their buildings and enjoyed working together in the fields and in the sheds restoring old tractors and windmills. They traveled many miles finding just the right toys for Herb's large collection. Both Herb and Lorina immensely enjoyed taking people out to the shed to show their guests the beautifully displayed collection of toys. Herb is survived by his loving wife, Lorina, Beulah; two sisters-in-law, Elvera Ziemann, Bismarck, and Helen Ziemann, Cheyenne, Wyo.; one brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Art and Adeline Ziemann, Hazen; two nephews, Larry Sommer and Quintin Ziemann, both of Hazen; as well as numerous other nieces and nephews. Herb was preceded in death by his parents; and his sisters, Lydia Sommer and Alvina Ziemann. He will be greatly missed.
