Description	:	COLRAIN - Herbert George Purington, 91, of 152 Wilson Hill Rd, Colrain, MA, passed away on Monday, March 28, 2016 at Baystate Franklin Medical Center following a brief period of failing health. He was surrounded by many family members. Herbert was born September 22, 1924 in Greenfield, MA, the son of George and Agnes Purington. He was a 1943 graduate of Arms Academy. Read More	COLRAIN - Herbert George Purington, 91, of 152 Wilson Hill Rd, Colrain, MA, passed away on Monday, March 28, 2016 at Baystate Franklin Medical Center following a brief period of failing health. He was surrounded by many family members. Herbert was born September 22, 1924 in Greenfield, MA, the son of George and Agnes Purington. He was a 1943 graduate of Arms Academy. On January 27, 1946 he married the former Barbara (Bunny) Page in Colrain. They recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. For almost all of his life Herbert lived and worked on the family's dairy farm, Woodslawn Farm, in Colrain. He was proud of the eight-generation farm and found deep satisfaction in improving the land and the cows he worked with. He often said that children were the most important crop raised on Woodslawn Farm. He was extremely proud of the accomplishments of his children and grandchildren. In his later years he actively patrolled his farm and the neighbors' in his electric golf cart, chauffeuring any willing passengers. Busy as Herbert was on the farm, he actively participated in both agricultural and town organizations. He received the USDA Soil Conservation Service Farmer of the Year award in 1958, traveling to Phoenix, AZ to receive the award. For several decades he served Colrain on finance and school committees and also served as a selectman. He was also a good neighbor to many people in personal ways. Herbert was an avid deer hunter and enjoyed coon hunting with his Airedale dogs. He faithfully followed sports, especially the UConn Huskies women's basketball team, the Red Sox, the Patriots and the Celtics. He was a lifelong reader of books, magazines and newspapers. He eagerly looked forward to and enjoyed his numerous trips to Alaska to do some visiting with relatives and to go fishing and sightseeing. Herbert was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. He was loved and respected and will be missed by all. He is survived by his wife Bunny; his children Jean (Thomas) Shippee of Jefferson, ME; Carol Purington of Colrain; James (Christine) Purington of Rutland, MA; Nancy Purington (Bob Vandevender) of Stuart, FL; Thomas (Sandra) Purington of Vero Beach, FL; Kenneth Purington (Jan Archambault) of Rollinsford, NH; Robert (Joyce) Purington of Colrain; Donald (Cathy) Purington of Colrain; David (Stephanie) Purington of South Deerfield, MA; and Ray Purington of Gill. 19 grandchildren: Karyn (Brad) Rosenkranz, East Longmeadow; Matthew Shippee, Hatfield; Michael Shippee, Portland, ME; Nathaniel (Nicole) Shippee, Stow; Mackenzie Arsenault, Portland, ME; Eric Purington, Tokyo, Japan; Carolyn Purington (Sam Chadwick), Stavanger, Norway; Myles Purington, Rutland; Jen (Travis) Stitt, Collegeville, PA; Jon (Erin) Purington, Rochester, NY; Daniel (Cynthia) Purington, Concord, CA; Carl Purington (Becky Novak), Colrain; Mark (Tanya) Purington, Colrain; Alison (George) Gutierrez, Colrain; Tasha (Ray) Gilbert, Colrain; Rachel Purington, Colrain; Alex Purington, Colrain; Katy Purington, South Deerfield; Elizabeth Purington, South Deerfield 12 great-grandchildren: Lilia and Max Rosenkranz, East Longmeadow; Jack and Lindsey Shippee, Stow; Mabel Purington, Concord, CA; Landon, Wade and Brynlee Purington, Colrain; George, Jr. and Redyn Gutierrez, Colrain; Austin and Hannah Gilbert, Colrain. He was predeceased by his parents, his daughter Marion Doran (1968) and his brother Walter Purington. Calling hours will be held at Smith-Kelleher Funeral Home in Shelburne Falls on Friday, April 1, from 6 to 8 p.m. The funeral service will be held at the First Baptist Church in Colrain on Saturday, April 2, at 2 p.m. with Pastor Jim Rennie officiating. Prior to the funeral service, there will be calling hours at 1 pm at the First Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Friends of the Griswold Memorial Library, PO Box 33, Colrain, MA 01340.
