Hofer, son of John M.S. and Sarah (Wipf) Hofer, was born on Dec. 31, 1919, in Freeman, S.D. He grew up in Freeman and graduated from Freeman High School and Freeman Junior College. He worked as a rural school teacher and taught for two and a half years in South Dakota. From 1942 to 1945, he served in the United States Army Air Force. On Aug. 25, 1943, he married Elsie Barber in LaHabra in Orange County, Calif. In 1946, the couple moved to Huron. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service until his retirement in 1982. He was a member of the Mount Olivet Mennonite Church and was baptized there in 1952. He was a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees and the American Legion. He is survived by his wife; two sons, Herbert Charles (Darlene) of Brandon, S.D. and John Thomas (Karen) of Huron; two daughters, Dorothy Inskeep of Mitchell and Deborah Stevens of Olympia, Wash.; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and one siter; Sarah (John) Gross of Freeman. He was preceded in death by three brothers, John, Alfred and Theodore, and three sisiters, Dorothy Tieszen, Anna Wilcox and Susie Kleinsasser.
