Description	:	Hoover was the thirteenth of seventeen children, being born at the very beginning of the great depression. And his journey through life was a hard one, straight out of an Horatio Alger novel. He was a son and grandson of a long line of sharecroppers who changed farms several times during their lifetimes. And his father had sharecropped on no less than five farms by the time Hoover was born and four after his birth. All the farms had sharecropper houses that were typical for that era. They were unpainted clapboard, tin roofed and sat high on crumbling brick pillars. And every one of them, with no exception, was illuminated by kerosene lamps and had a privy sitting far from the house. But Hoover broke that cycle of abject poverty by hard work and determination. Although every one of his older siblings had dropped out of school at an early age, he did not. In fact, he was the only one of the seventeen children who earned a high school diploma, albeit a GED. Hoover gave up the cotton fields and tobacco fields along about 1946/7, dropping out of 10th or 11th grade to enlist in the navy. After serving a hitch he returned to Richmond County and hired on at Steele Mill. He worked there until his retirement, advancing from entry level to department supervisor. It was the prospect of a supervisory position that encouraged him to earn a GED, for without it there would be no promotion. Mrs. Louise Guthrie, a family friend and teacher at Rockingham High School, undertook the effort to prepare him for the exam. Hoover fully understood the advantages of education and he and Ruby put their children through college, all four of them. Hoover was one that anyone would do well to emulate for he showed that what had gone before would not have the slightest effect on his success or failure. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Herbert Hoover Patrick, 83, of Pinehurst and formerly of Cordova, died Tuesday, September 4, 2012 at Quail Haven Village in Pinehurst. He was born November 10, 1928 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina. Herbert Patrick, the last of seventeen children, of the late James Wallace and Kathleen Atkinson Patrick. Mr. Patrick served in the US Navy and retired from Burlington Industries. He was a member of Cordova Baptist Church where he was a Sunday School Teacher and a Deacon. Mr. Patrick was an avid golfer and gardner. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, September 7, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. at Cordova Baptist Church with Rev. Bill Monroe officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the church fellowship hall. A private graveside service will be held at Richmond Co. Memorial Park.
