Read More	Herbert Lawson "Herbie" Rafuse - Age 90 of Chester. With sadness we announce the passing of Herbert Lawson Rafuse "Herbie" on Friday, March 13, 2020. Born on February 26,, 1930 to John and Florence (Bond) Rafuse. Herbert lived a full life and had many careers throughout those years. As a young man, age 15, he enlisted with the Canadian Army but the war ended before he would go overseas. Herbert had a lifelong association with the Wurts family of Philadelphia cutting Christmas Trees and selling the trees at the Wurts Farm. From there he worked various jobs and in 1952 married Gwen Meisner and started a family, and took a job with the Gordon family of Montreal as caretaker on Meisners Island and Ships Captain for some 40 years. Herbert could do just about anything when he made his mind up. He drove school bus, owned a successful wharf building business, but was happiest seated on his backhoe digging a trench, with one of his beloved German Shepards close by. Besides his parents, Herbert was predeceased by son, Jimmy; brothers, Philip, Robert and Marshall (James and Edward in infancy); and sister, Violet. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Gwen; and sons, Edward (Linda), Barry (Donna), Rick (Susanne); and daughter-in-law, Sandra, all of Chester; brother, Harvey (Betty); and sister, Betty- Ann; grandchildren, Tracey, Dana, Jason, Lyndon and Kyle; and four great-grandchildren. Herbert will be forever in our hearts and thoughts as a familiar and gentle source of strength, advising but letting us make our own mistakes. We would like to thank all of the staff of Harbourview Home for Special Care in Lunenburg for their kind and compassionate care during Herbert's stay there. We want to especially thank Mary-Ann and Tina and Doctors Kelly and Raymond for their tenderness and helpful concerns throughout Herbert's care. It meant so much to us. Donations in Herbert's memory if desired, can be made to the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia, Heart and Stroke Foundation or a charity of choice. Cremation has taken place and funeral arrangements entrusted to Davis Funeral Home in Chester. Burial will be at a later date. Published: March 20, 2020 - Halifax Chronicle Herald
