Herbert "Herb" Lee was born Oct. 20, 1925, to Clarence and Allegra (Schroeppel) King in Schaller. As an infant he was baptized into the Methodist Church in Schaller. He attended Eureka #1 Grade School and graduated from Schaller High School in 1943. Herb attended American Institute of Business in Des Moines from which he graduated in 1949. On Feb. 25, 1944, Herb entered the United States Navy where he honorably served his country. Herb served in World War II in the Pacific and was honorably discharged on May 7, 1946. On, Aug. 20, 1946, he was united in marriage to Mary Elizabeth Dewey at the Presbyterian Church in Schaller. This union was blessed with five children: Steven, Thomas, Barbara, Susan and Mark. Herb was employed by Storm Lake Production Credit Association for 27 years where he served as a loan officer, manager of the Ida Grove office and president for 21 years. He retired on June 20, 1984, after many years of being committed to those individuals for and with whom he worked. He was active in both Schaller and Lakeside Presbyterian Churches as an elder and deacon. Herb was a chairperson for the renovation project of the sanctuary at Lakeside in 1973. He continued to celebrate his faith at Westkirk Presbyterian Church in Urbandale. He was a member of the Schaller City Council, served on the Chamber of Commerce board in Storm Lake and as an adviser to the Iowa Lake Community College agriculture program. He especially enjoyed traveling to different places with friends and family and wintering in Arizona for 25 years. Herb treasured the memories of serving his country and found joy in sharing stories about it with others. He was proud of his family and cherished the time he was able to spend with them. Herb will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 66 hears, Mary; children: Steven (Sue) King of Atlanta, Ga., Thomas King of Urbandale; Barbara (Jeff) Blough of Johnston; Susan (Wayne) Bates of Scottsdale, Ariz.; and Mark (Jackie) King of Urbandale' grandchildren: Candace (Scott) Foerst of Atlanta, Ga., Melanie (Jason) Broich of Clive; Michele (Kirk) Nelson of Reno, Nev.; Brian (Erin) King of Nantucket, Mass.; David King of Newport Beach, Calif.; Aaron (Kelli) King of West Des Moines; Michael (Darcy) Bates of Goodyear, Ariz.; Sarah (Reggie) Voyles of Sac City; Lisa King of Urbandale; Allison King of Urbandale; and Adam King of Urbandale; great-grandchildren: Fiona and Sienna King; Madelynne and Cody Broich; Brock and Brynn Nelson; Sydney and Kinnick King; Kylie and Kolbie Bates; and William and Landon Voyles; siblings: Joe (Mabsie) King of California; Mary Lehrer of Ackley; and Mildred (Wayne) Blewitt of West Des Moines; and extended family and many friends. Herb was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Allegra King; father and mother-in-law, Dr. J.R. and Eva Dewey; step-father, D.J. Bennett; daughter-in-law, Colette King; granddaughter, Laura King; brother and sister-in-law, C.Wilfred and Rosemary King; niece, Cheryl King and brother-in-law Linton Lehrer.
