Description	:	The following excerpt is from the book "The First 100 Years in Codington County South Dakota" published in 1979: "Herbert McElhany Family Herbert McElhaney (9/1870-2/1932) was born in West Elizabeth, Pa., the son of Robert and Sara Jane Purcival McElhaney. In 1871 the family move to Winona County, Minn. and lived there eight years. Then they moved to Watertown, S.D. In April, 18896 he married Elizabeth Vernie Bailly (9/8/1882-9/1958) and they took up a homestead 13 ½ miles north and 3 miles west of Watertown. Read More	The following excerpt is from the book "The First 100 Years in Codington County South Dakota" published in 1979: "Herbert McElhany Family Herbert McElhaney (9/1870-2/1932) was born in West Elizabeth, Pa., the son of Robert and Sara Jane Purcival McElhaney. In 1871 the family move to Winona County, Minn. and lived there eight years. Then they moved to Watertown, S.D. In April, 18896 he married Elizabeth Vernie Bailly (9/8/1882-9/1958) and they took up a homestead 13 ½ miles north and 3 miles west of Watertown. This lland had been given to Elizabeth on April 15, 1892, signed by Pres. Benjamin Harrison on the Wahpeton-Sisseton Sioux Reservation in Germantown Township. They lived there the rest of their lives. Herbert died as the result of a farm-related accident. Elizabeth died after two years of poor health after a stroke. They had seven children. Hazel (11/1897-10/1962) married Walter Stamm and lived in and around Watertown for many years. They had five sons, Howard and his wife, Marion, live in Manitou Springs, Colo. and have three children and five grandchildren. Richard and his wife, Donna, live in Minot, N.D. and have two children. Wayne and his wife, Esther, live in Milwaukee, Wis., and have five children and several grandchildren. Robert and his wife, Joan, live in Madison, S.D. and have two children. Rachel married Ralph J. Ward and has a separate write-up. Mabel (6/6/1901-12/8/1954) married George Hendren on Sept. 19, 1922 and they lived in Watertown until 1952 then they moved to Zion, Ill. They had three children. Harvey James and his wife, Bette, live in California and have four sons, Gary, Lonnie, Doug and Craig, and several grandchildren. Arlene (7/3/1929- ) married Wm. McBrien on July 10, 1948 in Oberlin, Kan., they lived in McCook, Neb. for 3 ½ years and then moved to Watertown where she still lives in her parents home. They had three children: Ronald and his wife, Barbara, have two children and live in Watertown; Richard and his wife, Darla, live near Hayti and have three children; and Charlene married Tim Arneson, lives in Phoenix and has two children. Eugene and his wife, Pat, lived in Watertown until they moved to Illinois. They had four children, Regina, Marty, Michael and Bruce. Clarence (4/28/1903- ) married Eileen Riley McElhaney on Sept. 21, 1929. They lived in Watertown until the early 40s when they moved to Portland, Ore. They had three children, Gerald, William and Rita. Gerald and his wife Leah, live in Portland and have four children, Daniel, Nancy, Tricia and Jerry and two grandchildren. William and his wife, Marianne, live in Eugene, Ore., and have two children. Rita and her husband, Robert Shauger, live in Clackamas, Ore., and have four children, Douglas, Robert, Michele and another girl. Eileen has a daughter by a previous marriage, Betty Mowdy of Portland who has four children, Patrick, Dennis, Darin and Lisa with several grandchildren. Clyde (7/27/1908-7/1978) lived on the homestead until he retired in 1975 and moved to Florence. He never married. Lola (6/14/1910- ) married Matthew Guschausky in Zion, Ill. in the early '30s. In the 1960s she moved to Missoula, Mont. They had two sons: Matthew who lives in Missoula, and his wife, Margaret, and has three sons, and Richard who lives in Idaho and has two children. Eunice (8/2/1916- ) married Theodore Hotham in the late 1930s. She moved to Zion, Ill., after finishing school in Watertown. She still lives in Zion. They had two children: David and his wife, Maureen, have three children. Michael, Michele and Diane; and Alice and her husband Roger Reynolds, have two children, David and Debbie."
