When he was a very small child, his family moved to a farm in Clear Fork Township southwest of Frankfort, Kansas. Herbert, his sister Minnie, and his brothers Roy, Will and Elmer, attended the Brown School District No. 66. There he met and later married Esther Sanow in December, 1916. He brought his bride back to his parents' home where they helped with the farming while his brother Elmer, served in the Army during World War !. When Elmer returned from the service, Herbert and Esther moved into Frankfort where he worked at his brother Roy's Star Grocery for several years. Later they spent some time in the Sioux City, Iowa area where Herbert worked for a contractor. It was in Iowa that their 5-year-old daughter Dorothy, was struck by a truck and killed. They came back to Kansas, settled down in Marysville, Kansas, where Herbert worked for the Armour Company for many years as a truck driver on the egg and cream routes. When Armour sold out to Perry Packing Company, Herbert was made manager of the chick hatchery. Later, before his retirement, he worked for Ken Makalous' hatchery. Esther and Herbert Ford, were quiet hard-working parents, reared and educated their family of four in the years of the Depression and World War II. In September, 1982, after a long and productive life, 90 year-old Herbert died a few hours after being admitted to a hospital for the first time in his life. Note: This article was written just before the occassion of the awarding of the first $250 "Esther and Herbert Ford Human Development Scholarship" at Marysville High School in Marysville, Kansas. The Scholarship was established by Esther and Herbert's children Donald Ford, Maxine Ketchell, Lois Lueers and Verla Smith - all graduates of Marysville High School. The Scholarship was established in 1982, when Dr. Donald Ford, professor at the Pennsylvania State University, and founder of the College of Human Development at Penn State, returned to give the commencement address to the Marysville High School class of 1982.
