Description	:	Herbert Stewart Cornell, 74 of Vilas, died Friday morning, January 9, 2004 at home. He was born on Sullivan County, Tennessee on May 3, 1929. He was the son of Stewart James and Mary Margaret Simmons Cornell. Mr. Cornell was a veteran of the U S Army, having served in Korea, earning 5 bronze stars. He was an ordained minister, having served at Brush Fork Baptist Church in Ashe County. He was a painting contractor for a number of years and retired from the Physical Plant at Appalachian State University. He was born on Sullivan County, Tennessee on May 3, 1929. He was the son of Stewart James and Mary Margaret Simmons Cornell. Mr. Cornell was a veteran of the U S Army, having served in Korea, earning 5 bronze stars. He was an ordained minister, having served at Brush Fork Baptist Church in Ashe County. Survivors include his wife, Mary Hollar Cornell, one son, four daughters, six grandsons, three granddaughters, two great-granddaughters, two brothers, and three sisters. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews and a special friend, Dave Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Cornell and Mary Margaret Simmons Cornell, an infant daughter, Janet Gay Cornell, a granddaughter, Sally Rominger, one sister, Verlee Cornell and one brother, Earnest Cornell. Services were conducted Sunday afternoon at 2 pm at Bibleway Baptist Church. Officiating was the Rev. Rector Henson, the Rev. Michael Greene and the Rev. Harold Danner. Burial followed in the Old Mast Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Watauga County. Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Published: January 2004
