Zinck, Herbert Vincent - It is with great sadness that the family of Herbert Vincent Zinck, 84, of Lunenburg, announce his passing on Friday, December 17, 2010 at South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater. Born in Riverport, he was a son of the late Paul and Mildred (Conrad) Zinck. Herb's passion and love for community was evident to all who knew him. In his earlier years he worked at Crouse Radio Service, Pierce Electric of Halifax, Halifax Bowling Centre, owner of Lunenburg Cleaners and Pizza Delight, Bridgewater. He then went on to be Editor of the Progress Enterprise and Bridgewater Bulletin and Managing Editor of Lighthouse Publishing until his retirement at the age of 64. Active within his community Herb served as Councillor and Deputy Mayor for the Town of Lunenburg; held leadership positions for the Nova Scotia Fisheries Exhibition as Vice-President, Secretary, Stage Entertainment Chairman and Gate Admissions Manager; served as board member of Harbour View Haven, Fishermen's Memorial Hospital, Queen's General Hospital, South Shore Drug Dependency, Waterloo Lutheran Seminary and the Nova Scotia Hospital; was chairman for the Provincial Advisory Drug Dependency ; secretary of the Lunenburg Jaycees and member of the Lunenburg Board of School Commissioners. A sporting enthusiast, Herb was manager of the Flying Dutchmen Hockey Team and the Lunenburg Senior Softball Team; President of the Lunenburg and District Hockey League; South Shore Senior Hockey League and Captain of the Rockets Bowling Team. Music was an important part of his life and Herb enjoyed playing Clarinet with the Lunenburg Citizen's Band, Saxophone with the Mahone Bay Legion Band and singing with Zion Lutheran Male Choir where he was also Assistant Director. He was a faithful member of Zion Lutheran Church where he was involved in all aspects of congregational life, including serving as a member of the church council, was chair of the council, served on various committees, taught Sunday School, served as Sunday School Superintendent, and was also involved in the process of having Zion proclaimed as an heritage site. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Herb is survived by his wife of 64 years, Phyllis; daughters, Carol (Robert) Czerwienski, Detroit; Peggy (Jamie) Whynacht, Lunenburg; Sherry Oxner, Lunenburg; grandchildren, Tania, Christy, Candice, Jennifer, Josh, Drew, Shaylyn, Luke and Tia; great grandchildren, Taylor, Kendal, Baily, Brenna, and Keegan; brothers, Lloyd (Mary Lou), Sydney; Ray (Mary), Halifax, sisters, Virginia (Lawrence) Baker, Moncton, N.B.; Joanne (Joe) Hannam, St. John's , NFLD; many nieces and nephews and sadly missed by his cat, Sugar. He was predeceased by brothers, Marven and Gilbert. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Dana. L. Sweeny Funeral Home, 11213 Hwy #3, Lunenburg and where visitation will take place on Sunday from 7 – 9 PM. A service to celebrate Herb's life will be held on Monday at 2:00 PM. at Zion Lutheran Church, Lunenburg, Rev. Vivian Roberts officiating. Interment in Hillcrest Cemetery. Family flowers only. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Zion Lutheran Church or a charity of your choice. With thanks to Liz Burbidge.
