Herbert Clark, well-known contractor of Shenandoah and husband of former woman chairman of county republican executive committee, fell to his death Saturday evening. He was at work on a house, misjudging the distance of an open stairway in the building. He fell from the attic to the basement and was killed instantly. He was working with Alva Sanderson. Mrs Clyde Lawson was notified of the death by her father, J.E. Clark of Gravity, who is brother of the Shenandoahan. Mrs Lawson plans to accompany her father to the funeral Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the Methodist church. CLARINDA HERALD JOURNAL, Clarinda, Iowa, May 17, 1937 W. Herbert Clark was born at Conway, Iowa, Jan 19, 1879 and died in Shenandoah, Saturday, May 15, his death being caused from a fall. The funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon in Shenandoah at the M.E. church. Burial was in Memory cemetery at New Market. He resided in Conway with his parents, Mr and Mrs. W.W. Clark until October 1882, when they moved to Gravity. April 15, 1910 he was married to Helen Foster, the daughter of Mr and Mrs R.L. Foster, who now reside at Cole Springs, S.Dak. After their marriage they moved to Shenandoah where they had resided since. This union was blessed with one child, Herbert Foster, who died in infancy and was buried at New Market. During his early life he attended evangelistic meetings conducted by Billy Sunday and was converted to the Christian faith to which he was loyal until the end. Mr Clark was a very successful contractor and builder and in the course of years built many of the better homes and buildings in Shenandoah and Clarinda, Iowa. For several years he has served as government inspector for the Home Owners Loan Association of south-west Iowa. He was a man of firm conviction and [paper torn]..The deceased leaves to mourn his passing, his wife, three brothers Jesse Clark of Gravity, Fred Clark of Altoona, and George Clark of Denver, Colo., also one sister, Mrs Rosa Custer of Newton, Iowa.
