Description	:	Herman was born in Kalmar, Germany in 1859. He came to the United States at the age of four. His family settled in Michigan City and lived there for 12 years before coming to Medaryville, in Jasper County on a farm. When he was 21, he went to Chicago to work. His family settled in Michigan City and lived there for 12 years before coming to Medaryville, in Jasper County on a farm. When he was 21, he went to Chicago to work. On April 4, 1888 he was united in marriage to Gesena (Sena) Luken, daughter of Herman and Anna Luken. They owned a business in San Pierre for a number of years. Later he delivered the mail from the depot to the post office for a number of years on a high wheel cart until the mail was delivered to San Pierre by truck. Herman was also one of the founders of St. Luke Church in San Pierre and held a number of offices on the church council committees. Herman and Sena celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on April 10, 1938. Records show that 247 people came to congratulate them. ~~ Rites Held For Aged Resident of San Pierre SAN PIERRE, Jan. 10 - H. A. Hine, 90, well known resident of San Pierre, died at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. He had been an invalid for the last eight years. Since last Thursday he had been in a coma. The decedent was born in Kalmar, Posen, Germany, March 18, 1859, and came to America with his parents when four years of age, the family settling in Michigan City. When he was 16 years of age, the family moved to Jasper county, where he resided for five years. He then moved to Chicago where he lived two years, but returned to Indiana and took employment with the Nickel Plate railroad in DeKalb and Huntington counties. On April 8, 1888, he married Miss Sena Luken, of San Pierre, and took up his residence in San Pierre, where he lived for 62 years. To this union three children were born, one of whom, Mrs. Elizabeth Fitzgerald, preceded her father in death in 1946. Widow Survives Surviving are the widow; a daughter, Mrs. Mae Marshall, of Indianapolis; a son, Raymond, at home; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. The decedent was engaged in business in San Pierre for 50 years, and was a member of St. Luke's Evangelical Reformed church, the corner stone of which he helped lay soon after his arrival in San Pierre. Memorial services were held at 2 p.m. Monday in St. Luke's Evangelical Reformed church, with the Rev. Victor P. Frohne, of LaPorte, officiating. Burial was in San Pierre cemetery. Obituary published in The Vidette-Messenger of Porter County, (Valparaiso, IN), on Tuesday, January 10, 1950, pg. 3.
