He was the oldest son of Carl and Marie Langner and was employed by the German government for eleven years. He was the oldest son of Carl and Marie Langner and was employed by the German government for eleven years. On May 15, 1880, he was united in marriage to Ida Engel and two years later came to the United States locating first in New York City, then moving to York, Nebraska and in 1895 located in Seward. Mr. Langner was a member of the Seward Fire Department and received the 25-year service medal. He worked almost every day until six weeks ago when he was stricken with the sickness which caused his death. He was preceded in death by his wife who died in 1932; also by one daughter in Germany and a son Oscar.Mr. Langner passed away March 2, 1946, at the home of his son Otto, having reached the age of 89 years, 5 months and 24 days. He is survived by four sons, George, Fred, Otto, Herman and daughter Margaret, all of Seward; nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He had many friends who are grieved at his passing and who have known him for many years. Funeral services were held at the Chain & Wood Chapel on Monday afternoon, conducted by Rev. R. O. Walkenhorst, pastor of the Evangelical and Reformed Church, and the remains were laid to rest in the Seward Cemetery. Handmade harnesses are now almost a thing of the past, he says. Herman Langner, shown here with his great-granddaughter, Beverly Brust, has been a resident of Seward County for more than 50 years, and of Seward about 46 years. He will be 84 years of age on August 7th next, and the little miss will be three February 5th. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Brust, Jr., Mrs. Brust being the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Otto Langner. Mr. Langner first located at Cordova when he came to the county, then moved to Goehner, and about 1894 the late Gus Babson induced him to come to Seward and work in the harness shop operated by the Babson Implement Company. Then in 1897 when N. Wallenwaber & Son opened up their implement store and harness shop he went to work for them, remaining with the firm for 11 years and eight months. After that he worked for the late Paul Herpolsheimer, and Mr. Livingston, who bought out the harness business, and then for Albert Meyer Berthold, before opening up a shop of his own, from which he retired a few years ago. About 43 years ago he joined the Seward fire department, and one of his prized possessions is the 25 year service badge, presented to all members who serve continuously for that length of time. His four sons, Otto, Fritz, George and Herman, have all been associated with the department also, and Fritz, like his father, has a 25 year badge.
