He is now serving his 13th year as Pastor of the First Baptist Church of Cheraw, South Carolina. He is married to Mary Caroline Martin of Newberry, South Carolina, and they have two children-Mary Helen, age 18, and H. D., Jr., age 14. Dwight McAlister As published in the Morning News on Mar. 25, 2005. FLORENCE " Reverend Herman Dwight McAlister, 89, died Thursday, March 24, 2005, in a local nursing home after a brief illness. Rev. McAlister was born in Hannah a son of the late William and Purtle Turner McAlister. He attended both Furman University and Southwestern Theological Seminary and went on to minister at First Baptist Church in Cheraw for 19 years, and several other churches for more than 30 years. He also taught at public schools of South Carolina for 10 years and was Superintendent of Schools in Florence County. Rev. McAlister was a life member of Hannah Lodge No. 298 and Cheraw Lodge No. 15 and also served as Grand Master of Masons for South Carolina from 1962-1964, Grand Secretary of Masons for South Carolina from 1968-1996, and was currently Grand Secretary Emeritus of the Grand Lodge of South Carolina. He was a member of Lions Club and was a Past District Governor of Lions International District 32C. Rev. McAlister also served on the Board of Trustees for South Carolina Baptist Hospitals for 10 years and as a member of the Board of Trustees at Furman University from 1965-1969. Surviving are his wife, Mae Eva White Barker McAlister of Hannah; a daughter, Mary Helen (Calvin) Lowrimore of Myrtle Beach; a son, H. Dwight Mac (Paula) McAlister of Hannah; three grandchildren, Cal Lowrimore Jr. of Myrtle Beach, Logan MacAlister and Caroline McAlister, both of Hannah; a sister, Earldine Altman of Florence; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, March 26, at Union Baptist Church with interment following in the church cemetery, directed by Morris Funeral Home of Hemingway. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Shriner's Children Hospital, 950 W. Faris Road, Greenville, SC 29605-4277.
