Description	:	Herman F. Mayes went home to be with his Lord Jesus and his wife Betty Lou on Oct. 21, 2014. Herman was born Feb. 18, 1926, near Hillsdale, Ind. His parents were Austin and Grace (Swinford) Mayes. He graduated from Hillsdale High School in the class of 1944,. Immediately after graduation, he was drafted into the U.S. Army. Read More	Herman F. Mayes went home to be with his Lord Jesus and his wife Betty Lou on Oct. 21, 2014. Herman was born Feb. 18, 1926, near Hillsdale, Ind. His parents were Austin and Grace (Swinford) Mayes. He graduated from Hillsdale High School in the class of 1944,. Immediately after graduation, he was drafted into the U.S. Army. At the age of 18, he was aboard the Queen Elizabeth headed for France and on to Germany. He served with a tank battalion. His many stories about his World War II adventures were enjoyed by family and friends. Herman married Betty Lou Frist on Dec. 18, 1948. They resided in West Lafayette, Ind. He earned his bachelor's degree in agricultural engineering in 1952 from Purdue University. His first jobs were with the Agriculture Research Service working on grain storage facilities. They moved to Watseka, ILL. in 1954 and from there to Columbia, Mo. in 1965. He worked with animal transportation with the Ag Research Service at the University of Missouri. He earned his master's degree in ag engineering while there. After Betty passed away in 1990, he moved back to Indiana and lived on the Frist Family Farm. Herman was born to be left-handed but he lived during the time when teachers changed that by smacking left hands with a ruler and putting you in the corner with a dunce cap on. This made him very determined to succeed in life and he did, and was a very good left-handed bowler. He will be missed by his family and friends. Herman was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a brother, Harold Mayes and his wife Nora "Jean" Mayes; nephew, J.R. Pearman; nephew, Luke Frist, an American hero who died in the Iraq War; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Mary Edith and Russell Banes. Tribune Star, Thursday, October 23, 2014
