Read More	Herman H. Ostermiller went to be with the Lord on March 2, 2009, after a brief and courageous battle with cancer. He was determined to spend his last days in the home where he raised his family and that is exactly what he did. Herman was born on Feb. 3, 1924. He was one of 11 children, the youngest son of Pete and Anna Ostermiller. He spent the early years of his life working on the family farm near Huntley enduring many of the hardships that were all too common during the Great Depression. Like so many young men of his generation, Herman enlisted in the United States Navy in 1940 at the very young age of 16. During his years of service, Herman served on the aircraft carrier USS Block Island, which was sunk by a German U-boat off the coast of North Africa on May 29, 1944. A new USS Block Island was commissioned on June 10, 1944, and Herman, as an original crew member, was once again re-assigned to the Block Island, this time serving in the Pacific Theater. Herman often said that one of the greatest privileges of his life was serving his country in both the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters during WWII. Upon discharge, Herman returned to Billings and took a variety of jobs. Herman was a strong proponent of giving a hard day's work in exchange for a good day's pay. For over 35 years, he was employed by Northwest Freightlines, which later became Garrett Freightlines. For much of his tenure there, he maintained a six-day workweek. He was a proud member of the Teamsters Union and was always ready to lend a hand to a friend or coworker in times of need. On Oct. 20, 1951, Herman Ostermiller and Marge Gabel were married at the First Congregational Church. To this union, seven children were born. Herman loved to spend his free time watching his children and grandchildren participate in sports. Rarely a game went by that Herman wasn't there with his ball cap on, a cigar in his mouth and always a few choice words waiting at the ready for an errant umpire or official (he was never shy about expressing his thoughts!). In his later years, he spent entire summers working in the yard "irrigating" to ensure that he had the greenest lawn in the neighborhood. Herman is survived by his wife, Marge Ostermiller of Billings; seven children, Randy of Laurel, Rick (Cindy) of Billings, Rhonda (Dennis) Schmidt of Billings, Russ of Billings, Ray (Annette) of Billings, Ron (Debbie) of Williams, Ariz., and Rod (Jan) of Billings; and three sisters, Helen Derheim of Billings, Esther Wagner of Salt Lake City and Leona Ruliffson of Bull Head City, Ariz. He has eight grandchildren, Jason (Angie) Ostermiller, Brent (Adrian) Ostermiller, Justin (Darcy) Ostermiller, Autumn (Matthew) Archer, Justin (Nicole) Schmidt, and Gracie, Ellie, and his "sweetsie" Anna Kate Ostermiller. He was also "Grandpa" to nine great-grandchildren. A celebration of his life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 7, at the First Congregational United Church of Christ. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens with full military honors. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to RiverStone Health Hospice, 123 S. 27th St., Billings, MT 59101. Another member of the Greatest Generation has passed, but his contributions will never be forgotten. Goodbye, Grandpa, we love you!
