He was the only son of Fred and Dorothea (Luetzow) Marten. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith in his early childhood, was one of the first organizers of the Immanuel Lutheran church at Merna, Nebraska, and has remained a faithful member to the end. ... MARTEN (Merna) Herman Julius Marten was born at Sandow , near Arndswolde, Germany, September 9, 1864, and departed this life February 5, 1940, at the St. Francis hospital in Grand Island, Nebraska , at the age of 75 years, four months and 27 days. He was the only son of Fred and Dorothea (Luetzow) Marten. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith in his early childhood, was one of the first organizers of the Immanuel Lutheran church at Merna, Nebraska, and has remained a faithful member to the end. In June 1868 at the age of four years he came to America with his parents and three sisters, locating first at Petersburg, Menard county, Illinois. After receiving a limited amount of education in the Petersburg public schools, he assisted his father at coal mining, while still in his early youth. They lived in that county until the fall of 1882, when the father and son came to Custer county, Nebraska to look over the country in search of a place to locate. The father secured a tree claim near Merna and they returned to Illinois. The following spring the son, Herman, returned to Custer county. He emigrated to Grand Island, that being the end of the Burling railroad. The remainder of the journey was made overland with team and wagon. He broke the first sod on their farm and spent the summer with his aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs Karl Grabert. In the spring of 1886 his parents and one sister came to Custer county. The family made their home in an old sod store building in Merna until their sod house was built. About 20 years later he homesteaded about seven miles southwest of Merna and at that time purchased an adjoining farm where he built a modern farmstead that was his home the remainder of his life. He was united in marriage to Miss Katie Juergens of Petersburg, Illinois, March 4, 1908 and to this union five children were born. Besides his wife, he leaves to mourn his loss, his three sons, Fred J., Herman Julius, William A,; two daughters, Dorothy and Louise and two grandchildren, all of Broken bow. One sister, Mrs. Augusta Hoffman of Petersburg, Illinois. Two sisters preceded him in death. The departed had made Custer county his home continuously since 1883 and was one of the properious farmers and stockmen of this part of the state. He passed through may trying experiences during his early years, but has been an energetic and progressive manager and now has a fine farm and ranch to show for his efforts and thrift. He is a man of stability and worth and though much interested in local affairs has never sought public office or honor. He is recognized as a public-spirited citizen by all who knew him. Funeral services were held on Thursday at 2:30 at the Immanuel Lutheran church at Merna, with burial in the Merna cemetery. Services were in charge of Rev. V. H. Winters, pastor of the church. Music was furnished by Mrs. Gerald Fenster and Mrs. Harry Daharsh, accompanied by Mrs. Herbert G'Schwind. Pallbearers were, Karl, Paul, John and Herbert G'Schwind and Arthur and Karl Safranek. Out of town relatives in attendance at the funeral were: Jerry Juergens and Miss Anna Juergens of Petersburg, Illinois and Mr. and Mrs. Arnold G'Schwind and family of Callaway. For the past thirty years, died Monday morning at his home there. He is survived by his wife, who is the former Katie Juergens of Menard county, two daughters, Bessie and Louise and three sons, Fred, Julius and William. Miss Anna Juergens and Jerry Juergens left immediately upon receiving word of his death, for Broken bow, to attend funeral services which were held there.
