He lived in St. Louis, Missouri and Burlington, Iowa, until the outbreak of the Civil War. He enlisted in the Union Army as a private in 1861 at Red Bud, Illinois and rose to the rank of sergeant. After his three year term, he re-enlisted at Germantown, Tennessee in 1864 and was mustered out at Nashville, Tennessee on November 4, 1865. On October 3, 1868 he was married to Louise Ellerhoff. She was born in Nettlestadt, Westfalen, Germany on February 20, 1843 and came to America in 1868, settling in Burlington, Iowa where her brothers and their families were living. After farming in Iowa for nearly fifteen years, the Kroeger family, including six children, came to North Dakota, arriving at New Salem on April 30, 1883. They took a homestead about five miles north of town. Three chidren were born here. One son, Carl died in 1888 when he was less that two years old. Mr. Kroeger was a charter member of the Frieden's Evangelical Church. He was elected its first president and served in that position for more than thirty years. He and his sons were active in the development of the dairy industry in the area. He retired from active farming shortly after the death of his wife in 1908, but continued to make his home with his sons until her death on October 20, 1920. The children are: Louise, who married William Hassebrock and moved to Okawville, Illinois; Herman who married Elizabeth Schumacher; Anna was married to Charles Keidel and farmed near Mandan; Caroline was married to John Christiansen; William was married to Wilhelmina Holle; Fred was married to Louise Geissler; Martha was married to Henry Backsen and Henry. They are all deceased. The original homestead is now owned by Lawrence Kroeger, a grandson.
