Description	:	Herman was born in the village of Sprengel a providence of Hannover, Germany. Herman, his father and sister came to the United States in 1888. In 1892 Herman settled in Florida,Ohio and started a sawmill on the East edge of Florida near the canal. There is currently a park there. Read More	Herman was born in the village of Sprengel a providence of Hannover, Germany. Herman, his father and sister came to the United States in 1888. In 1892 Herman settled in Florida,Ohio and started a sawmill on the East edge of Florida near the canal. There is currently a park there. Herman continued to operate the sawmill and sell building materials until 1912, when he moved the family to Defiance, Ohio. They lived in an apartment until the early 1920's, when the family moved to a farm on the south edge of Defiance, across from the cemetery on St Rt.111, where he operated a dairy farm. About 40 acres were bounded by the cemetery and the Auglaize River and about 160 acres and the house were across the road from the cemetery. The family had a milk route, delivering milk both morning and evening for 4 cents a pint and 8 cents a quart. A hired man and his family lived across the road in a small house. Herman didn't like farming and in 1924 the family moved to a "mansion" at 2327 Putnam St. in Toledo, Ohio. The 3 story house had lots of fireplaces, a huge dining room including a built-in buffet with beveled glass doors, a ballroom with doors that slid into the wall, a maids entrance, a 6 ft. oak stairway, 2 upstairs apartments for guest and a wine room. Howere, the children hated Toledo. Herman invested in the stock market and soon lost his money, so the family moved to Defiance and rented the house where they had previously lived. Later the family moved across the road to the house where the hired man had previously lived, and in 1928 the family moved to 913 Deatrick St. Herman did odd jobs, and worked on a farm near Bryan for his brother in law, Ernie Sudholtz.
