Description	:	Hermann Frederick Reichardt was born in 1839 to Christoph and Anna Reichardt, in the state of Saxony, Germany. At the time of the Prussian War, he left Germany and sailed to Australia where he spent three years. He returned to Germany; then he came to America via the way of Cape Horn which took 110 days. Read More	Hermann Frederick Reichardt was born in 1839 to Christoph and Anna Reichardt, in the state of Saxony, Germany. At the time of the Prussian War, he left Germany and sailed to Australia where he spent three years. He returned to Germany; then he came to America via the way of Cape Horn which took 110 days. He docked in Philadelphia, where he met Anna Elisabeth Knau, who he later married in Chicago. Hermann walked from Philadelphia to Pittsburg, where he met a Mr. Lutz. Going to Chicago, they opened a meat shop at 242 North Ave. During the Chicago fire they buried their tools. After the fire Mr. Lutz remained in Chicago, but Hermann and Anna moved to Corning, Iowa, where he opened a dry goods store. In 1881 he purchased land and moved to Cass County, where he remained until his death. To this union 11 children were born: Paulina (Mrs. John Holste); Louisa (Mrs. Herman Walker); Leopold (married Laura Melzer); Herman (married Pauline Holste); Edward (married Alvina Melzer); Anna (Mrs. William Rae); Ida (Mrs. Henry Luehring); George (married Mary Banks); Frank (married Nannie Grant); Alma (Mrs. Andrew Banks). George, Frank, and Alma settled in Imperial, Nebraska. Anna in Windom, Minnesota, and Leopold in Corydon, Iowa. The rest remained in the surrounding area. After Hermann moved to Cass County, he ran a slaughter house, where people brought their beef and hogs to be butchered from as far as 50 miles - taking several days in wagons pulled by horses. Most of his sons followed in this same trade. Hermann was instrumental in helping to bring a number of families from his homeland to America, including his brother, Edward, and a sister, Emile Winkler, both coming in 1882. Hermann must have seen in Iowa the Iowa creed: "Land of limitless prairies, with rolling hills and fertile valleys, winding and widening streams; with bounteous crops and fruit laden trees, yielding to man their wealth and health; Golden grains whose harvest fills the granaries of the nation making it opulent with power of the earth's fruitfulness." In this area Hermann built his own home and many that his family lived in. His farm southeast of Massena was a showplace. Hermann passed away in November, 1916, and Anna in May of 1936. Both are buried in Victoria Township Cemetery. The keys to the original butchershop in Chicago and some of the tolls that were buried during the fire are now in the possession of Hermann's great-granddaughter, Mrs. Keith Kerkmann of Massena. Atlantic News Telegraph November 20, 1916 Page 8 MASSENA, Ia., Nov. 20 - Herman Reichardt, Sr., died suddenly Tuesday at his home in Victoria township. He had been sick for a long time but lately had felt better and on the morning of his death was better than usual. Mr. Reichardt was born in Germany but came to America many years ago and for years has lived in Victoria township. He leaves besides his wife, six sons, Herman P., Louis F., Leopold W., Ed H., Frank, all of Massena, and Wm. of Nebraska; four daughters, Mrs. John Holste of Idaho Falls, Mrs. Wm. Rae of Minnesota, Mrs. H. F. Luehring and Mrs. Andrew Banks of Victoria township, and one daughter, mrs. D. F. Walker, died several months ago. Funeral services were held form the Victoria German church Saturday and interment was made in Victoria cemetery. Adams County Free Press November 22, 1916 Page 7 Herman Reichardt Dead - Herman Reichardt, Sr., living southeast of Massena, died at his home last week, of heart trouble, according to dispatches to the daily press. he has been ill for some time, but was improving. The funeral services were held last Saturday. Adams County Free Press November 25, 1916 Deceased was born May 21, 1839 in Germany and was 77 years, 5 months, and 24 days. He and his family were residents of Corning about thirty years ago after coming to America to establish a home. He owns the building in which the grocery store of C. S. John is being conducted, and had other property in this city for many years. He leaves his wife and ten children, all of whom attended his funeral. They are as follows: Frank Reichardt, William Reichardt of Imperial, Nebraska; Mrs. William Rae of Windom, Minnesota; Mrs. Pauline Holste of Idaho Falls, Idaho; Louis Reichardt, Leopold Reichardt, Eddie Reichardt, Mrs. Edith Leuhring, Mrs. Alma Baker, all of Cass County; Herman Reichardt, Jr. residing near Massena. Mrs. Louise Walker died last January. Mr. Reichardt was a very highly respected citizen throughout this section of the country and will be greatly missed.
