Read More	Friends and acquaintances of long standing and relatives were at the Trinity Lutheran Church at Griswold last Sunday afternoon to pay their last respects at the bier of Herman Schwartz, who died at his home south of town last Thursday evening at the age of 83 years, 7 months and 6 days. Rev. A. H. Mattheis, pastor of the church, was in charge of the services at which both the English and German languages were used. Touching musical selections were rendered by the church choir. Mr. Scwartz’s death followed two paralytic strokes, the first a light one, which he suffered on April 16, succeeded shortly thereafter by another more severe, from which he failed to rally. The man had been blessed with the best of health throughout all of his long and useful life, and in was not until last fall that he began to fail. He was bedridden most of the past winter. Herman Schwartz was born at Bederkesa, Hanover, Germany, on September 16, 1853. He had two brothers and two sisters, all of whom preceded him in death, and his parents of course, died many, many years ago. He left his native land in 1882 to seek his fortune in the United States, coming to what was then Dakota Territory. He first settled at Fort Ransom, worked there as a farm laborer for some time, went from there to Cass county, and short time afterwards came to LaMoure county, and built up the farm now occupied by one of his sons, Wm. Schwartz and family. In the year 1883, he was united in marriage to Hermina Papenfuss, and to this union three children, all sons, were born. Mrs. Schwartz departed this life in 1908, but Mr. Schwartz continued active management of the family farm, later turning it overt to his sons. Through hard work, strict attention to business and the practice of thrift, he was able through his lifetime to lay up a considerable portion of this world’s material wealth. Surviving are three sons, Bernhardt, William an Henry, all of Prairie township, eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. At the funeral Sunday, Fred Miller, Otto Busche, Fred Busche, Carl Lebahn, Henry Otte and F. H. Bubach served as pallbearers. The remains were laid to rest in the Trinity Lutheran cemetery at the side of his wife who passed away so many years ago. And so ends life’s span for another of the thinning ranks of this community’s pioneers. May his sorrowing relatives find comfort in the knowledge he has now found eternal rest.
