Cedar Rapids Gazette, 23 Mar 1983 Clayton County businessman killed when car falls off jack COMMUNIA — Herman Harris, 66, owner of the Communia Store and Garage, south of Elkader, died Monday night when a bumper jack slipped causing the car he was working under to fall on him . The vehicle landed on Harris's head and neck causing him to suffocate, said Dr. David Cranston of Elkader. He pronounced Harris dead on arrival about 10:30 p.m. at Central Community Hospital in Elkader. He said the incident probably occurred about 7:30 p.m. Harris was found beneath the car by his wife. Communia is about four miles south of Elkader in south-central Clayton County. Elkader Herman G. Harris, 66, an auto mechanic and owner of the Communia Store and Garage in Communia, died Monday in a mishap at the garage. Surviving are his wife, Ruth; a stepdaughter, Shirley Meyer of Garber; five stepsons, Sheldon Clinton of Cedar Rapids, Roland Clinton of Freeland, Wash., Nyal Clinton of Grimes, Iowa, Dennis Clinton of Spokane, Wash., and DeVere Clinton of Edgewood; and three brothers, Roy and Bill, both of Cedar Rapids, and Clarence of Florida. Services: Thursday, 2 p.m., Hope Lutheran Church, Littleport. Friends may call after 2 p.m. today at Witt's, Elkader. Burial: Edgewood Cemetery, Edgewood.
