LOSES BATTLE WITH ILLNESS Lieutenant Grenawalt Passes On at March Field Early Yesterday Morning Yesterday the flag hung at half-mast at March Field in tribute to Lieutenant H. Vane Grenawalt, whose death occurred early yesterday morning from the attack of pneumonia which prostrated him on his return from a visit to his parents at Lamoni, Iowa, just a week ago. His is the first death at the aviation field. C. U. Grenawalt, father of Lieutenant Grenawalt, arrived late last evening on the delayed California Limited, but in any event he could not have arrived in time to see his son alive, though he left for the west immediately on receipt of the news that his illness was serious. Arrangements for the funeral will be decided today, and the remains will be taken east. The service for a dead aviator is made a most impressive one when interment is made near the field, making it possible for the flyers to be in the air over the scene. Lieutenant Grenawalt was one of the first officers to arrive at March Field when the camp was ready for men. He came from Rockwell Field on April 29 as supply officer of the 215 aero squadron. Soon he was made assistant post supply officer and acting ordnance officer. On August 28 he was commissioned first lieutenant, and later received his commission as flyer. He had made numerous flights and had passed over San Bernardino a number of times. Lieutenant Grenawalt's record is one which demonstrates the triumph of determination over handicap of health. When the United States entered the war he had completed a stay of three years practically in isolation on a cattle ranch in New Mexico, battling with incipient lung trouble. He won the fight, and was pronounced entirely cured. He enlisted in patriotic service, the aviation branch, in Des Moines at the earliest opportunity and was sent to Kelly Field, and later to Rockwell Field. In physique and bearing, Lieutenant Grenawalt was the ideal officer and suggested nothing but the finest fitness as to health. Those who survive the aviator are the members of the family circle at home, from whom he so lately parted in fine health and spirits, Mr. and Mrs. C. U. Grenawalt, a sister, Miss Hope Grenawalt, and his wife, Mrs. Lois Aldridge Grenawalt of this city.
