Mr. Merritt was a 1937 graduate of Chester High School. He worked for Burkhart Poultry and Eggs until 1967, when the company was sold to Scarborough Produce in Huntington. He then worked for Ford Meter Box in Wabash from 1973 to 1983. After his retirement, Mr. Merritt worked for Shepherd's Chevrolet and Cadillac in North Manchester. He was a member of the Congregational Christian Church in North Manchester and enjoyed woodworking and making clocks. Mr. Merritt was born Oct. 4, 1918, in Miami County to Ernest and Jessie Shaw Merritt. He married Mary Ellen Burkhart on May 26, 1938, in St. Joseph, Mich., and his wife died May 16, 1996. Survivors include a son, Karl Merritt of North Manchester; four daughters, Donna Merritt of Indianapolis, Martha Pursifull of Huntington, Becky Merritt of Warsaw, and Beth Merritt of Ligonier; two sisters, Shirley Kauffman of Seattle, Wash., and Beverly Yentes of Merced, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Julie Kent Merritt, a sister, and five brothers. Calling hours are from noon to 2 p.m. Tuesday at Congregational Christian Church, North Manchester. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the church, with Pastor J.P. Freeman officiating. Burial will be at Oaklawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, preferred memorials are to the Congregational Christian Church in care of Grandstaff-Hentgen Funeral Service, 207 W. Main St., North Manchester, IN 46962.
