William Caldwell of whom a sketch preceding this has been given. In 1841, in his nineteenth year, Mr. Caldwell came with his parents to this county. He worked on a farm till he was twenty-three years old. In 1845 he, in company with G.T. Vandegriff, began the manufacture of brick, and from that time to this, in connection with his engagements as a contractor and builder, he has carried on that business. In 1852 he became a contractor and gave especial attention to that business till 1877. In 1860 he was elected President of the Agricultural Society of Wabash County, and retained that positon for fourteen years. In 1867 he was elected member of the State Board of Agriculture, and continued on that board for twelve years. In 1873 he was appointed by the board to superintend the construction of the expostion buildings at Indianapolis. In 1876 he was chosen President of the State Board of Agriculture. Though not in the field during the Rebellion, being restrained by the helpless condition of his family, and by the belief that he could accomplish more for his country ouf of the Army that in it, he was very active in raising both men and means for carrying on the war. He was appointed by the County Commissioners to disburse the bounty fund offered to those enlisting to make up the county's quota of men upon the several calls made by President Lincoln. In the course of his duties he handled many thousands of dollars, and accounted for every cent that passed through his hands. In 1858 he was elected President of the Wabash & Mount Vernon Plank and Gravel Road Company, and in 1863 he was chosen President of the Wabash & North Manchester Plank and Gravel Road Company, each of which positions he held several years. In 1878 he was elected Treasurer of Wabash County, and was re-elected in 1880. In 1848 Mr. Caldwell was married to Miss Jane Gibson, of Chautauqua County, N.Y. He has had nine children, of whom seven are living. Above has been sketched something of the more salient points of the life of a man who has eminently been a busy man. Besides the public works he has managed, he has been industriously engaged in private engerprises that others have always been ready to place in hands that never betray a private trust. The interests of orphans have been as safe in his hands as have those of the most ready and alert business men. He is regarded as a safe counselor, and is often called upon for advice in matters of importance. Though perhaps not filling so large a space as some other men in the eyes of the public, there is no man to whom Wabash County owes more for the advancement of her material interests.
