Afternoon August Holdgraf, 88, highly respected pioneer resident of Hamilton county (sic), passed away last Thursday afternoon at the home of his son, Emil, in this city, after a brief illness. Mr. Holdgraf came to this community as a young man and has been one of the substantial citizens whose efforts contributed to the development of the county and state. Final rites were held from the Federated church (sic) Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, with Rev. David Tudor officiating. Mrs. Fred Stevens, accompanied at the organ by Effie Swanson, sang "The Touch of His Hand on Mine" and "Under His Wing." August Holdgraf was born in Westphalia, Germany in February 1852 and was the youngest son of Henry and Christina Holdgraf, successful farmers of the province. He emigrated to the United States and arrived in Hamilton county (sic) in 1881. He brought a 160-acre farm on which he built a small house with lumber bought at Aurora. In 1882 he was married to Miss Josephine George and to this union two sons were born, Paul and Emil. He and his wife were faithful members of the Presbyterian church (sic) and later of the Federated church (sic). Mrs. Holdgraf died in 1924. He passed away Thursday afternoon after a short illness of the infirmities of old age, having attained the age of nearly 89 years. He leaves the two sons, other relatives, and many friends to mourn his departure. Pallbearers were S.L. Chapman, Andrew Grosshans, J.B. Hagarity, E.J. Newhouser, and Carl and John F. Bremer.
