Larry’s Massachusetts family and friends gathered for a funeral mass at Our Lady of the Assumption Church in Osterville on Thursday, September 7. Larry had just returned to Massachusetts to begin treatment for lymphoma (cancer)) but the disease progressed very rapidly and he died at the hospital listening to Frank Sinatra with his partner of 30 years, Susan Truitt of Osterville, Massachusetts. Larry had been a cancer survivor for about 10years when the cancer returned shortly before his death. Larry had been in Gunnison, Colorado with his son Hilary Edward when the cancer returned. He and Susan returned to Cape Cod for cancer treatment. In addition to Susan, Larry is survived by his two children, Hilary Edward Lassek of Gunnison, Colorado and Theresa Marie Lassek of Lincoln, Nebraska; and his sisters Loretta (Frank) Kucera of Lincoln and Susan Neal of Orlando, Florida and their families. In addition, Larry will live in the hearts of Susan’s children, their spouses and grandchildren as a loving and committed member of their family community. Larry was the son of Hilary Michael Lassek and Helen Marjorie Spanggaard Lassek; he was born in Omaha, Douglas County, Nebraska. He was a paratrooper in the U.S. Army in the late 1950s. After the Army Larry volunteer to go to Vietnam with the American Red Cross as a civilian Red Cross service worker in the early 1960s, Larry’s professional passion was helping those in need. He worked for 35 years in public and private agencies to bring services to those who were being left behind. He began as County Welfare Director of Box Butte County Nebraska. He was most proud of helping underserved Native Americans, of helping thwart President Nixon’s efforts to cut anti-poverty services in rural Nebraska, for bringing administrative order to a number of anti-poverty agencies in chaos, and for developing innovative funding mechanisms for affordable housing and other community based programs. While serving as Executive Director of Goldenrod Hills Community Action agency (GRHCAAA) he served three Indian Reservations: ( the Winnebago in Thurston County, the Santee Sioux Tribe of Nebraska in Knox County and the Omaha Tribe of Nebraska in Thurston County Nebraska. As Executive Director of the Woodbury County Iowa Community Action agency in Sioux City, Iowa he served many low-income urban Indian families. He worked in the State Office of the Nebraska Department of Public Welfare a number of years. As Executive Director of GRHCAAA. Larry was very supportive in the founding of the Center For Rural Affairs (originally a component of GRHCAA, later a delegate agency of Goldenrod Hills and finally as a separate free-standing Private Non Profit Agency. The original staff members of the Center were former staff members of Goldenrod Hills CAA. Co-directors of the Center for Rural Affairs Donald Ralston was Deputy Director of GRHCAA; and Martin Strange was Planner for GRHAAA; Everett Kilzer and Laura Whitewing Snake were part of the planning department of GRHCAA; LaDonna Bartling was a secretary at GRHCAAA. Two of the Center for Rural Affairs board members Harold Swanson and Allen Heine were originally on the GRHCAC governing board. While in Walthill, Larry was a very loyal supporter of Hubert Humphrey. He worked o n the presidential campaign of Rep. Dick Gephardt in the 1980s. More recently, Larry was an active volunteer on the Cape for Senator Elizabeth Warren and many other Democratic candidates for national and state office. In 2015 Larry completed and published a book titled “The Ugly Bureaucrat”, a searing look at how and why bureaucratic organizations often fail to help the downtrodden. Larry was buried on September 15, 2017 at the Lassek family gravesite in Lincoln, Nebraska. Contributions in Larry’s honor may be made to Cape Cod Hospital through the Cape Cod Healthcare Foundation and the Cape and Islands Democratic Council. Graveside services were held at 2:00pm on Friday September 15, 2017 at Fairview Cemetery. Rev. Father Lyle M Johnson from Saint John the Apostle church in Lincoln, officiating: Pallbearers were; Mike and Mark Kucera, Mathew and Lyle Mellon. Honorary pallbearers were Randal and William Neal. Military Rites were conducted by th U.S. Army Honor Guard. Following the service a reception was held at “Garden Room” at Wyuka Funeral Home.
