Description	:	Hilda Bertha McCarthy, 94, of Park Rapids, MN, formerly of Plankinton, SD, passed away Friday, May 18, 2012 at Diamond Willow Assisted Living in Park Rapids. Funeral Services are 1:00 P.M. Tuesday, June 5, 2012 at the United Methodist Church in Plankinton with Pastor Amy Atkins officiating. A Committal Service will take place at Mizpah Cemetery, followed by a luncheon at the church. Visitation will be held two hours before services at the church. Hilda Bertha Schamber was born on June 11, 1917, in Colome, SD to Jacob and Matilda (Kahler) Schamber. She was the fourth of eleven children. As a young woman, Hilda worked on her parents' farm in South Dakota and helped care for her younger siblings. On June 28, 1947, she was united in marriage to Robert McCarthy in Luverne, MN. Over the years, Hilda and Bob lived in South Dakota, Wyoming, Colorado, Iowa and Minnesota. She was a stay-at-home wife and mother who loved to cook, make German dishes and sing German songs. She enjoyed fishing for walleye up north on family vacations in Minnesota. She also shared the love of baseball with her husband and was a huge Minnesota Twins fan. Hilda's outlook on the world was always with a smile on her face. Everyone she saw was always greeted with a hearty smile, a smile she carried to the very end. Grateful for having shared in Hilda's life: her two daughters: Peggy Hale of Houston, TX and Judy (Kaj) Granholm of Nevis, MN; four grandchildren: Christine and Jeffrey Hale, Royce (Jenny) Sampson and Steven Sampson; ten great-grandchildren: Ryan and Joshua Hale, Amber, Morgan and Zachary Hale, Andrew and Lauren Sampson, Taylor, Cody and Carter Hernandez-Sampson; six great-great grandchildren: Thomas, Mason, Stephen, Nicole, Trenton and Caleb; three step-grandchildren: Damon, Jr. (Penny) McMcarthy, David (Audrey) McCarthy and Debra Martin; four step-great-grandchildren: David, Jr., Devon, Jordan and Chad; three sisters: Leona Rapç, Louise (Joe) Hyatt and Ikie Johnston; a brother, Bill (Lee) Schamber; along with several nieces and nephews. Hilda was preceded in death by: her parents; her husband, Robert (1998); two grandsons: Tracy and Brandon Hale; a step-son, Damon McCarthy, Sr.; three sisters: Edna, Esther and Alvena and three brothers: Albert, Edwin and Arthur.
