They were booked to start their voyage leaving on the ship HERO of the Wilson line which sailed to Hull, England on March 20th (3 or 4 days). From Hull the passengers would have traveled by train to Glasgow, Liverpool or Southampton. The HERO connected to only one Dominion Line ship, called the Sarnia which departed Liverpool on 28 Mar 1890 and arrived in Halifax 4 Apr 1890. The ship then proceeded onward to Portland Maine. There is a strong indication that Hilda and Einar were on the S/S Sarnia when it left Liverpool. When leaving Norway their destination was listed as Tacoma, Washington. However, family tales from the Fontaines suggest that Einar's mother Hilda had a fight on the journey over and that they decided to part ways with Hilda's traveling companion (some suggestions are that it was Einar's natural father) and she stayed in Minnesota while the companion went on to Tacoma.
