Member of Prominent Local Family and War Veteran Funeral Friday Hildor Bagne Ellison, 43, brother of Norman and Otto Ellison of the city, and a member of a prominent pioneer Minot family, passed away at the Veterans’ hospital in Portland Ore., Monday night from a heart attack superinduced by pneumonia. The remains accompanied by his wife and three children will arrive in Minot Friday morning. That afternoon services will be held at the First Lutheran church with Rev. R. Ulvillden officiating. Burial will be in the Ellison plot in the Lutheran cemetery, north Minot, beside the bodies of the parents Mr. and Mrs. E. Ellison, and two brothers, William and Edward, who died years ago. Veterans of the World War will serve as pallbearers and taps will be sounded over the grave of this hero of many of the fierest battle of the World War. Born at Fargo, where his father, the late E. Ellison was a pioneer merchant, October 8, 1891, Hildor, attended the Fargo schools. When the family moved to Minot in 1903 shortly after E. Ellison opened the Fair store. Hildor attended the Minot schools. He was a member of the high school band which was directed by the late Supt. S. Henry Wolfe. Hildor was a member of Co. D and accompanied that company to the Mexican border. Shortly after his return, he enlisted in the 6th Marines, 73rd Machine gun company, which was stationed at Quantico. His company was sent to France shortly after, the United States entered the war and Hildor was engaged in many of the fiercest battles. There was but a small remnant of his company left and this was filled in with new members. Hildor was cited for bravery on more than one occasion and he received citation not only from our own county but he was the recipient of the Croix de Guerre from the French government. Among the engagement in which Hildor participated during the World War were Toul Sector; Alone defensive; Chateau Thierry; Alone-Marine offensive; Soissons; Marbache section; Chamgagne sector; St. Mihiel offensive; Meuse-Argonne offensive; crossing of the Meuse river. He was cited in general orders No. 63, headquarters of Second division, A. E. F. France, Sept. 12, 1918. As follows: “After an advance into an extremely exposed position, this man volunteered and moved two kilometers into the town of Vierzy under fire, establishing liaison, and cared back rations and ammunition to the plained, for it would not finally determine the status of Moodie, but would result only in a decision on the firing line and water to wounded comrades lying in open fields. He was cited for gallantry in action near Thiaucourt on Sept. 15, 1918, in maneuvering his gun to a move advantageous position under heavy rifle, machinegun, and artillery fire. This was mentioned in general orders No. 2, general headquarters. His action at Thiaucourt also was mentioned in general orders No. 88, Second division, as follows: “ In the action against the enemy near Thiacourt on Sept. 15, in the face of an enemy attack, he displayed great courage and entire disregard of personal danger under heavy artillery fire, maneuvering position and inflicting heavy casualties to the enemy ranks.” On March 24, 1919, he was awarded the Croix de Guerre with silver star and with the following citation: “On July 19, 1918, near Vierzy his unit being exposed to a violent fire of artillery and machineguns, he volunteered to establish a liaison with his village and brought back food and ammunition to the fighting line. Ellison also was entitled to wear the French fourrugere, with two silver stars, a shoulder decoration awarded to outstanding regiments. Mr. Ellison and his family had resided in the west for more than 10 years. He was connected with department stores in Spokane, Wash., and Portland, Oregon. Years ago he was employed at the Ellison store in Minot, and later he was employed in the Wymann & Partridge wholesale house in Minneapolis, later becoming a salesman for that concern. Mr. Ellison was married to Miss Eleanor Shatz of Enderlin, N.D. The widow and three children, James, 13, Wilhelm, 11 and Eleanor, 9, survive. Other survivors are the two brothers Norman Ellison, of Minot: Otto Ellison of this city, who is spending the winter at Coral Gables, Florida; a sister, Ruth (Mrs. Donald E. Mac-Gregor), Portland, Oregon, and a sister, Gertrude) Mrs. C. A. Davick), Hoboken, N.J. Mr. Ellison once served as Captain of Co., D. in Minot.
