Description	:	Hill McCloskey had a good life as a country boy, growing up surrounded by hard working McCloskey and Timmons family members who were cattle and sheep ranchers. In the June 23,1900 Census for Union Township (now the town of Arcata), Hill's grandfather, father and uncle were all listed as having the occupation of "Shingle Bolt Makers." In the June 23,1900 Census for Union Township (now the town of Arcata), Hill's grandfather, father and uncle were all listed as having the occupation of "Shingle Bolt Makers." That Census also shows that Hill was living with his father James Hill McCloskey, his mother Esther Matilda (maiden name Wegg) McCloskey, and his brother Ernest and sister Charlotte. Living next door were Hill's grandparents, Alexander Gillan McCloskey and Martha (maiden name Hill) McCloskey, with his uncle Daniel McCloskey and aunt Mary Elizabeth (maiden name McCloskey) Kane (widowed at only 24-years-old, due to a logging accident), and Mary's two young sons, Alexander Gillan Kane and Robert E. Getty Kane. On Christmas Day in 1914, Hill, his father James, and another family member went hunting on the family's Essex Ranch in what is now Arcata, Humboldt County, California. Hill's father had given him a new shotgun for Christmas and after opening their gifts, they went out hunting for goodies to cook for their Christmas dinner later that day. The hunting party was passing through a wire fence with a hole in it, and Hill was preparing to climb through that hole. He put his shotgun through first, propping it up against the wire fence on the other side of the fence. After he made his way through the hole, he leaned forward to pick up his new gun. The trigger caught on the jagged wire and went off, the blast catching Hill directly in the center of his body. In shock and horror, Hill's father ran to clutch his son -- Hill died shortly afterward. A history of Hill's maternal English side: Esther Matilda Wegg's father, Albert Richard Frankland Wegg, was born in Baconsthorpe, Norfolk, England, March 13, 1842 (his birth was registered in Erpingham, which is close to Baconsthorpe, in the quarter Jan. - Feb. - Mar. of 1842) and her mother, Elizabeth Charoltte (maiden name Church) Wegg, is believed to have been born in the London, England, area. Albert and Elizabeth were married during the quarter Oct. - Nov. - Dec. of 1865 at Saint George Hanover Square, London, England. Esther was born in Ireland while her father was working there as a hotel manager; their family had lived for a short time in Dublin, County Dublin, and then in County Antrim. At some point, Esther's father returned to Baconsthorpe and then he moved to the London area, where he remained for the rest of his life. Albert Frankland Wegg appears in these census records: 1851 Census, Baconsthorpe, Norfolk, England -- male, 9-years-old, born in Baconsthorpe, son of head of household; 1891 Census, Fulham, St. John's, London, Middlesex, England -- male, 49-years-old, born in Baconsthorpe, head of household; March 31, 1901 Census, Lambeth, Norwood, St. Luke, London, Middlesex -- male, 59-years-old, born in Baconsthorpe, head of household. The town of Lambeth is one mile SSE of London and just east across the Lambeth Bridge over the Thames River. Albert Richard Frankland Wegg's father was Robert Wegg, born February 23, 1807, Baconsthorpe, Norfolk and Albert's mother was Sarah Cooper, born in Baconsthorpe. Robert Wegg's father was also named Robert Wegg, born November 8, 1779, Baconsthorpe and Robert's (b.1807) mother was Phillis (maiden name Frankland) Wegg, christened December 12, 1756, Baconsthorpe. Robert and Phillis were married on October 16, 1803, Baconsthorpe. Phillis Frankland's father was Richard Frankland, and her mother was Jemima. It is possible that Richard Frankland was married first to Phillipa, as there were several children born to Richard Frankland and Phillipa. They were: Richard Frankland, christened August 23, 1724; Robert Frankland, christened April 7, 1728; and Elizabeth Frankland, christened April 12, 1737. Children born later to Richard Frankland and Jemima were: Jemima Frankland, christened November 3, 1747; Thomas Frankland, christened October 30, 1749; Mary Frankland, christened October 4, 1751; a second Jemima Frankland (perhaps the first one died?), christened September 9, 1753; unknown gender Frankland (presumed stillborn), christened April 14, 1755; and Mary Frankland, christened February 2, 1764. All children born to Richard Frankland were christened in Baconsthorpe. Sarah Cooper's father was Thomas Cooper and her mother was also named Sarah Cooper. Sarah Cooper appears in the 1871 Census, England and Wales -- female, 84-years-old, born in Baconsthorpe, registration district Erpingham, sub-district Cromer, mother-in-law of head of household (Sarah was also the mother of Walter Matthew Wegg, 22 years-old, christened in Baconsthorpe April 30, 1848, see below). Others in that household were: George S. Skillings, male, 50-years-old, born in Baconsthorpe, head of household; Sarah Skillings (daughter of Sarah Cooper), female, 50-years-old, born in Baconsthorpe, wife of head of household; and Walter Matthew Wegg, male, 22-years-old, born in Baconsthorpe, stepson of head of household. In the 1861 Census for Baconsthorpe, Erpingham, Cromer, Walter Matthew Wegg appears with his brother and sister: Walter Matthew Wegg, male, 12-years-old, born in Baconsthorpe, son of head of household; Robert Thomas Wegg, male, 15-years-old, born in Baconsthorpe, son of head of household, and Phillis Harriet Wegg, female, 8-years-old, born in Baconsthorpe, daughter of head of household.
