He died on Friday, November 23, 2001, at Saint Joseph Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska, as the result of an automobile accident at the age of 88 years. He attended country school at Cairo and graduated from Wapello High School. He received a B.S. degree at Iowa State University an M.S. degree at North Dakota State University, and a Ph.D. from Cornell University. North Dakota State University and the University of South Dakota each awarded him an Honorary Doctorate. In 1935 he married Lillian Dinusson at Svold, North Dakota. He joined the Animal Science staff at Oklahoma State University in 1936 and later was a Professor and then an Associate Dean of Agriculture and Associate Director of the Agricultural Experiment Station. In 1950 he became Dean of Agriculture and Director of the Agricultural Experiment Station at the University of Wyoming in Laramie. In 1958, he was appointed President at South Dakota State University and served in that capacity until 1975. Upon retirement from that post, he was designated a Distinguished Professor of Agriculture, taught for two years, and was subsequently appointed Director of International Programs. He was involved in the development of the Botswana, Africa Project, an AID Program for teaching and research and Agricultural Extension in that country.His memberships include the First United Methodist Church, Rotary, Chamber of Commerce, American Society of Animal Science for which he served as Secretary, Vice President, President and Business Manager for the JOURNAL OF ANIMAL SCIENCE. Committee assignments also included National Research Council (Animal Nutrition), Administrative Committee on Research for the U.S.D.A., Midwestern Educational Television, North Central Association (Colleges and Universities), Institute for International Education, National Institute of Animal Agriculture, Association of U.S. Universities of International Agriculture Programs, Upper Midwest Research and Development Council. He served on the Executive Committee and was President of the Continental Dorset Club and was Life Director of the American Southdown Breeders Association. Hilton judged sheep shows in the U.S. for 55 years with return invitations to most. There were two invitations to serve foreign countries. He also judged cattle in the U.S. and in Brazil. While in Wyoming, he was in charge of the AID contract that established a College of Agriculture and a College of Engineering that were attached to the University of Kabul in Afghanistan. Dr. Briggs was author of MODERN BREEDS OF LIVESTOCK, a college text through four editions; Feeds Section of the Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology; Cattle Section of the World Book Encyclopedia, 40 Journal Articles and Bulletins; and numerous livestock magazine articles. He served as a consultant for the United Fruit Company in Honduras and for the Minister of Agriculture in Brazil. Honors have included Fellow in the American Society of Animal Science, Fellow in the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Alpha Zeta, Gamma Sigma Delta, Phi Kappa Phi, Society of the Sigma Xi, Builder of Men Award from the FarmHouse Fraternity, National 4-H Club Achievement Award, Decoration for the Distinguished Civilian Service by the Department of the Army, Exceptional Service Award by the U.S. Air Force, Beadle Club, Liberty Bell Award, Saddle and Sirloin Club honorary portrait exhibit, Horseman of the Year in South Dakota, ARGUS LEADER SOUTH DAKOTA 99, and the South Dakota State University Library named in his honor. Biographical listings have included: WHO'S WHO IN AMERICA, WHO'S WHO IN THE WORLD, WHO'S WHO IN THE MIDWEST, WHO'S WHO IN EDUCATION, AMERICAN MEN AND WOMEN OF SCIENCE, DICTIONARY OF INTERNATIONAL BIOGRAPHY, THE BLUE BOOK, SUCCESSFUL PERSONALITIES, INTERNATIONAL WHO'S WHO IN COMMUNITY SERVICE, COMMUNITY LEADERS AND NOTEWORTHY AMERICANS, and MEN OF ACHIEVEMENT. His hobbies included the raising, training and exhibiting of horses; hunting and fishing, photography, travel, and sports. In a recent autobiographical sketch requested by a home area publication he wrote, "There have been a great many experiences and I would enjoy making the same journey over again." Hilton is survived by his wife Nelda Campbell Briggs, whom he married on August 2, 1997; one son, Dinus Briggs (June) of Las Cruces, New Mexico and their children and grandchildren, Denise Briggs Lucht (Andrew) of Las Cruces and their daughter Allyson, Deborah Briggs Renaas (Doyle) of Nunda, South Dakota and their children, Alex, Brianna and Casey; one daughter, Janice Briggs Remmele (Robert) of Cincinnati, Ohio and their son Marshall. Hilton is also survived by Nelda's children and grandchildren, Jeri Myers (Wayne) of Lincoln, Nebraska and their children and grandchildren, Sarah Myers Hunt (Derek) and their daughters Jasmine and Elizabeth of New Haven, Connecticut, and Benjamin, Jared and Samuel of Lincoln, Nebraska; and Hunter Campbell (Kathy) and their son Jerome of Grand Island, Nebraska. He was preceded in death by his wife Lillian, his parents, two brothers and one sister. Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, November 28, 2001 at First United Methodist Church, Brookings, South Dakota, with Rev. Teri Johnson and Rev. Paul Baker officiating. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Brookings. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Rude's Funeral Home and prior to services at the church on Wednesday. He has served on the faculties of North Dakota State and Oklahoma State where he became Associate Dean and Director of Agriculture. From 1950 to 1958 he served as Dean and Director of Agriculture at the University of Wyoming. He was named the thirteenth President of South Dakota State (1958-1975). He then served as Distinguished Professor of Agriculture and Director of International Programs at South Dakota State. He was elected President of ASAS in 1952 and was named a Fellow of that society in 1974. Dr. Briggs has judged at most of the major US livestock shows. A prolific author, his "Modern Breeds of Livestock" is widely accepted as a college text. His portrait was hung in 1978. Died 2001.
