Hiltrude was born on February 26, 1917, in Waverly, Iowa, the daughter of Ida Marie Panzer and Dr. Edward Braulick, former President of Wartburg College. Read More	Hiltrude Irene Gronewold, 93, of Waverly, Iowa, died on Friday morning, August 27, 2010, while a resident at Evergreen Arbor, Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community, Waverly. Hiltrude was born on February 26, 1917, in Waverly, Iowa, the daughter of Ida Marie Panzer and Dr. Edward Braulick, former President of Wartburg College. Hiltrude grew up in Oelwein, Iowa, attended high school in Seguin, Texas 2 years of college at Texas Lutheran in Seguin, Texas, and then moved to Waverly in 1935 – graduating from Wartburg College in 1937. She taught school in Toledo, Ohio, and then returned to college to get her Library of Science degree from the University of Illinois. While at Wartburg, she met her future husband, Richard. They were married on May 14, 1942, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Waverly. Hiltrude & Richard, a pastor, lived in Wooster, Ohio; Greenock, Pennsylvania; Lost Nation, Iowa; Wyoming, Iowa; Manchester, Iowa; and Shell Rock, Iowa, serving congregations in these communities. Upon moving to Waverly, their ministry continued at Bartels and several neighboring congregations. Hiltrude, throughout the years, was involved in directing children's choirs, teaching Sunday school, leading Girl Scout troops, visiting the family cabin in Minnesota and traveling, including several European trips. Her love for reading was instilled in all of her children. She belonged to a book club, was active in AAUW, served on many church committees, and enjoyed attending national women's church conferences. Hiltrude served on Wartburg College's Alumni Board and was always a strong advocate for the college. Hiltrude returned to the work force as an elementary school librarian in Manchester and as a high school librarian and German teacher in Waverly. In Hiltrude's "spare time," she and Richard raised 6 children: son James (Marsha) Gronewold of Glenwood, Minnesota, 5 daughters Joanne (Wayne) Kendrick of El Paso, Texas; Karen Gregory of Edina, Minnesota; Kathy (Eddie) Entz of Waterloo, Iowa; Jan Mabe of Ames, Iowa; Julie (Brad) Johnson of Sacramento, California: 12 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren Derrick (Michelle) Gronewold – Julia, Christopher; Darin (Melissa) Gronewold – Jasper, Greta; Sarah (Tim) Coleman – Ethan; Susan Anderson; Josh (Susan) Kedrick – Preston; Tyler (Tera) Gregory – Lila,; Cory Gregory; Matthew (Brenda) Entz – Kellen, Konner; Jennie (Adam) Delagardelle, - Hayley, Paige, Kallie; Nicholas Mabe; Shaun Mabe; Ross Johnson. She is also survived by 1 sister, Edith (Henry) Flathmann of St. Paul, Minnesota; and 2 sisters-in-law, Katherine Braulick and Georgia Braulick. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Richard, 3 brothers- Roald, Paulus, and Jim; 1 sister, Ruth, and 1 sister-in-law, Margaret Braulick. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, August 29, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. with burial in St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery in Waverly. Public visitation will be held on Sunday from 1:00 p.m. until services. Memorials may be directed to Bartels Lutheran Chaplaincy Fund, or the Waverly Public Library.
