Hinderk Lammers Riekens and Gepke Abbas were married on 16 April 1881 in Wymeer, Ostfriesland, Germany. They had a son Geerd Jans. H. Riekens (30) and his wife G. Abbas (30) along with her father, G. Hinderk Lammers Riekens and Gepke Abbas were married on 16 April 1881 in Wymeer, Ostfriesland, Germany. They had a son Geerd Jans. H. Riekens (30) and his wife G. Abbas (30) along with her father, G. Abbas (59) arrived on 31 May 1882 in New York aboard the steamship, "Nemesis", Captain Pease, of the Royal Netherland Steamship Co. (Amsterdam Line). They left from the Port of Amsterdam, Netherlands and were on a "permanant sojourn" to the United States. Their ship accommodations were in steerage. Their 7 month old son, G. Riekens died enroute on 26 May 1882. Hinderk Riekens and his father-in-law, Geert Abbas were both laborers. Also on board was Gepke's married sister, M. Janssen (33) and her husband, W. Janssen (24) and their children, G. Janssen (4), J. Janssen (3) and F. Janssen (2). They came to Cleves, Hardin County, Iowa. There they "resided for eleven years, coming to this community in 1893, when the family settled on a farm southwest of Kanawha". Henry was a farmer.
