His parents were Frederick and Betsy (Caples) Alsever, both of whom were born in Columbia, Herkimer Co., N.Y. Mr. Alsever was one of ten children, two of whom survive him, Lester who lives on the old Alsever homestead in Oswego county, N.Y. and Nelson, whose home is in Syracuse, N.Y. The subject of this sketch was a cooper by trade. He followed his profession in his native state till 18-6 when he joined his brother Abram in Wisconsin. In 1866 both brothers moved to Webster county, Iowa, where Abram resided until his death in 1910, in Otho, Iowa. Hiram worked at different points and finally settled near Pilot Mound in Boone county where he became a successful farmer. On March 3, 1870 he was married to Miss Mary Myers, who preceded him to the eternal world seven years ago. To this union eight children were born, three of them deceased. Those living are Clarence, Florence, Craven, Ada Forbes, May Taylor and Cora Sorber, besides sixteen grandchildren. All live near Pilot Mound except May Taylor and family, who reside at Armour, S.D. Mr. Alsever died at the home of his son, Clarence, on the afternoon of July 7th from cancer of the stomach. He died trusting in Christ as his personal Savior.
