Emery is Dying He grows Rapidly Worse, and the End seems Near -- All the Family New There Except His Son Hiram, Who Left for the South Last Night. The sad news was received yesterday that H.A. Emery is dying. On Friday, Hiram Emery received a letter with the information that his father was much improved and strong hopes of his recovery were entertained, but yesterday's announcement destroys all hope and indicates beyond question his serious condition. About the first of August, Mr. Emery came to the city of Chicago from the south to consult with an eminent specialist regarding a physical development bordering on paralysis. He was advised to give up all business, for absolute rest of body and mind. He returned to Mobile within a few days and but a few weeks after, suffered a slight stroke of the fearful malady. A few weeks later other developments indicated a return of the trouble, and a telegram called Mrs. Emery to his side. Doubtless further complications became manifest, inasmuch as the two daughters, Miss Lizzie and Mrs. T.L. Handy, left the middle of last week in answer to the sad news of their father's continued decline. Mr. Emery was born in Maine and came to Michigan in 1864, soon after which time he became interested with H.W. Sage & Co. He continued contract work in the Michigan forests about 10 years and interested himself in pine lands in the south at the same time doing business with Sage & Co. and interested in a sawmill at East Tawas. He went south about a year ago and not long since commenced the erection of a home for his family at Mobile. The house was nearly ready for occupancy when Hyde came here to remove the household goods. But now that Mr. Emery is dead, it is altogether likely that the family will move back and remain here. The Funeral Attendance Was Large, Rev. F.W. Irwin Preached Eloquently and the Interment Took Place in the Family Plot at Oak Ridge Cemetery. (later moved to Elm Lawn) Death is always sad, it is a common leveler, and brings the human heart together. There is no sermon as pathetic, or as eloquent as the open grave, and no voice as commanding. Hundreds of pioneers and friends of later years filled Westminster Presbyterian church yesterday afternoon, as they gathered to pay their tribute to the dead and show their sorrow for, and sympathy with the bereaved. The remains reached the church at 2:30 and were born down the isle to the solemn strains of music; the bearers were S.O. Fisher, Thomas Toohey, M. Hagarty, E.D. Pierson, Geo. A. Allen and H.S. Ingersoll. "Abide With Me," was beautifully rendered by a quartet composed of Mrs. W.F. Irvin, and Miss Jessie Hull, and Messrs. Thomas and Garland, an earnest prayer was offered, after which Pastor Irwin read appropriate passages from the gospel. In his remarks, the preacher dwelt upon the mortality of man and the uncertainty of human life, and the great comfort and help in gospel of Jesus Christ. The sermon was effectually delivered and made a deep impression. The quartet then rendered another selection, the benediction was pronounced and the great concourse moved solemnly through the body of the church, to take the last look at the face of the dead. The hearse again received its charge and the cortege moved slowly to the silent city, and the father was placed beside the two little ones, who long since preceded him to the farther shore. Mr. Emery leaves a widow and five children to mourn his calling away. Mrs. Thomas L. Handy, Hiram Jr., Lizzie, Ella and Dana, (Deanah Ward "Love" Emery) the later 5 years old. The family have the sympathy of the entire community in their sudden affliction.
