Chico Daily Record, Tuesday, June 13, 1905, pg 8 col 1: Well Known Chico Young Man Dead. H.B. Gay Passed Away Sunday at Home in Alameda After Short Illness. Well and Favorably Known in Chico, Where Greater Part of His Life was Spent – Funeral Today. Word was received in Chico Sunday of the death at Alameda on that day of B.H. [sic: initials reversed in article] Gay, a former well-known resident of this city, where he was reared, and where up to about four years ago he had made his home. “Bert” Gay, as he was more familiarly known, received his education in the schools of this city and was for many years employed in various commercial houses in various capacities, to his own credit and to the satisfaction of his employers. About five years ago he succeeded to the cigar business established by the late George Brooks in the Union hotel block, which he conducted for some time, finally disposing of it and removing to the Big Meadows section. There some three years ago he was married to Miss Maude Randall, and shortly after, finding the high altitude not agreeing with his heart, he removed to Alameda, which had since been his home, and where he had been employed as a conductor on the street cars. Among his fellow men Bert Gay was a general favorite and in this city which was practically his native place, having come here at the age of four years, he held through the years of his young manhood the friendships made in schoolboy days, and many will learn with deep sorrow of his untimely passing. He was born in Dixon, Illinois, June 17, 1870, and came to California with his parents when an infant, living with them at Auburn, Placer county, until about four years of age, when his mother died, and he was brought to Chico by his aunt, Mrs. L.H. Burket, and became a member of the family and Mr. and Mrs. Burket, with whom he made his home up to the time of marrying and establishing a home for himself. The remains were shipped to this city on yesterday’s Oregon express, arriving about 4 o’clock, and were taken tot eh home of Mr. and Mrs. Buket at the corner of Sixth and Sycamore streets, from which place the funeral will take place this afternoon at 5 o’clock, Rev. W.G. White of the Presbyterian church officiating. He was a charter member of Court Butte, No. 58, Foresters of America, which organization will attend the funeral in a body, and render the last services at the grave.
