Peck, an aged pioneer passed away Sunday at 8:30 a.m. at his home in South Ottumwa. Mr. Peck who was 83 years of age has been a resident of Wapello county for about the past 45 years and of Ottumwa for about the same period. Mr. Peck was born in Westport, Conn., October 7, 1832. When but a small lad he left home and became a sailor before them ast [sic] where, he encountered many thrilling adventures. He was persuaded by his mother to give up this hazardous occupation and entered the service of the New Haven railroad. Later he changed to the Chicago & Milwaukee railroad and worked for them thirteen years. In 1870 he was promoted to the position of foreman of the engine department on the St. Louis, Kansas City & Northern railroad which position he held until he retired. He is survived by the following children: Harry, W.J. [sic], Frank, James, Ada and Mrs. Charles Lewis all of Ottumwa. The funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 from the residence on East Mary street, conducted by Rev. W.D. Spiker. Peck was born in Westport, Conn., October 7, 1832 and died Sunday, January 10, 1915 at the age of 83 years. The deceased, when a small lad became a sailor but later gave up this occupation and entered the service of the Chicago & Milwaukee Railroad Co. for which he worked thirteen years. In 1870 he was offered the position as foreman of the engine department of the St. Louis, Kansas City & Northern Railroad, which position he held until he resigned and took up farming. This he did not so much as a matter of business but to enjoy the remainder of his days, a quiet and retired life. He was united in marriage in 1855 to Adeline Pratt of Evanston, Ill., who preceded him in death eighteen years ago. To this union were born eight children: Hiram P., who died at the age of twelve years; and Emma C., the wife of Samuel Pedrick, having died just one week preceding her mother’s death, and the following all of Ottumwa: Harry E., W.I., Frank K., James G., Mrs. Phoebe S. Lewis and Miss Ada at home. Besides these he leaves seventeen grandchildren and several great grandchildren to mourn his loss. The deceased came to Iowa in 1870 and settled on a farm, southeast of town but which since has become of part of the city limits. He has been a resident of Wapello county for the past forty-five years. Funeral services were held at the residence on East Mary street, Tuesday, January 12, 1915 at 2:30 o’clock conducted by Rev. W.D. Spiker of the Plymouth Congregational church. The services were attended by a large number of friends and neighbors. Interment was made in the Shaul cemetery.–Contributed.
