Mahoney, Jr., about 28, of Broadus, was killed Monday 13 miles from Broadus on the Broadus-Biddle road, the Powder River county sheriff, Claude Anderson, reported. His death marked the first Montana traffic fatality in 1949. Anderson said the jeep in which Mahoney and his wife were riding turned over, Mahoney was thrown into a ditch and his wife landed on the highway, unconscious. Anderson said Mrs. Mahoney suffered severe frostbite, but has not been hospitalized. Survivors are the widow, a 7-year old daughter, and his father.
