Andrew received a telegram from Washington yesterday, announcing the death of Hiram R. Enoch, formerly a well known resident of this city. Mr. Enoch has many friends in Rockford to whom the news will be very sad, if not entirely unexpected. He has been ill for some two years, and constantly growing worse, and his friends who have watched his condition have been afraid that he could not live much longer. Hiram R. Enoch was born in Warren county, O., Jan 2, 1828. In 1834 he removed with his parents to Will county, Ill., and in 1826 came to Winnebago county, where he resided until 1883. He was educated at the Rockford common schools and took a term in Beloit college. He resided on a farm until the fall of 1855 when he was elected county treasurer, in which capacity he remained for eight years. In 1862, he went into the army as captain of Co. C, 57th I. V. I. His company was assigned to duty at Camp Douglass in Chicago, where he acted as Provost Marshal. In the spring of 1864 he was transferred to the 136th I. V. I. as Quartermaster, the regiment being stationed at Paducah, Ky. In 1866 he spent the summer in Texas as Inspector of U. S. Customs along the Rio Grande river. In 1867 he became connected with the Winnebago Chief published in this city, and in 1870 he purchased the paper and changed its name to the Journal, which was for years the official organ of the democracy of the county. In 1883 Mr. Enoch's health became impaired and he went to Florida where he acted as overseer on a plantation for a year, thence going to Virginia and conducting a farm. In 1885 he was appointed Special Pension Agent and removed to Washington. He has served in that position since, and it was while on an official visit to Elmira, N.Y., that he was first taken ill. His illness was caused by a wound received in the head while in the army, and it caused an irritation of the brain. Last September Dr. Ford Thompson endeavored to remove the difficulty by an operation by which several pieces of bone were removed from the head. But "Hi" became steadily worse and eventually lost the ability to speak except the mere words "yes" or "no". He remained conscious, however, to the end. February 23, 1851, Mr. Enoch married Miss Adeline E. Sheldon, of Belvidere, who survives him. Besides his wife he leaves a son, Henry Enoch, and a daughter, Ellen Enoch, all of whom reside in Washington. Mrs. J. J. Andrew, of this city, is a sister to deceased, and Mrs. C. A. Works is a niece. The funeral was to take place today. The plan was to take the remains over the Baltimore & Potomac R. R. to a station midway between Washington and Baltimore, then convey them to St. Stephen's church cemetery, to be laid by the side of his younger son, Willie, who was buried there about two years ago. This is also the burying place of his mother's family for generations, the first of whom emigrated from England away back in the early days of Maryland. Mr. Enoch left a life insurance of about $800. He was the recipient of a pension of $30 per month, which will go to his widow.
