She was born in Newport, R.I. in 1815, the daughter of Caleb and Mary (Thurston) Anthony. Hollis was in later life an overseer in the textile mills. She was born in Newport, R.I. in 1815, the daughter of Caleb and Mary (Thurston) Anthony. Hollis was in later life an overseer in the textile mills. It is evident that he therefore had worked in the industry, beginning at the lowest level and advancing. Since textile mills were prevalent in Rhode Island, it may prove that he started in Scituate and then, once experienced enough, was able to advance accordingly. In 1850, for example, he was working as a "Mule Spinner" in a North Providence textile mill, the mule spinner being responsible, along with two helpers, for spinning wool, etc. on a machine that could hold more than 1,000 spindles at a time. In 1863 he was in New Bedford, MA as proven by the birth of a child, and by 1865 a mule spinner at a Sutton, MA mill. In 1874 he was in Pawtucket, R.I. as a mill overseer, residing at 107 Middle Street. No doubt he lived in a better class of housing owned by the mill corporation, but at least located within walking distance of the mill concerned. He and his wife became members of the Embury Methodist Church, Cross St., Central Falls in 1874. Hollis died at 113 Cedar Street, Pawtucket, R.I., on March 8, 1908, age 82 years, 2 months, and 3 days of age. No headstone marks his grave at Oak Grove Cemetery.
